Hey, First post here (Second after intro)

Ive just found that my RH Tail light and RH front light are both not working,
RH break works fine, and tests full 12v,
RH Tail occasionally reads 2-4v when engine running but when off reads 0.
Front light reads 0.

All bulbs have been replaced,.

I think this rules out an earth issue as a) some voltage gets thru, and b) the Break light in same socket is working fine.

So whats the next stage? The whole wiring assembly is bundled thru the chassis to the front so I cant check for any chaffage on the way up to the fusebox, and should I be looking in the fusebox area for the next stage of diagnosing whats up?

Ta!

Previously my experience is old tractors which tend to be a lot simpler!

1992 90 - as factory, and no I dont have a diagram! Cant seem to find one for a 200tdi
It's probably an earth problem - electrical issues on a Defender usually are, in my recent experience. Try using a jump lead attached to the chassis or battery negative, to the negative on your lights, to test. Check for circuit completeness when switch on to rule out chafing/breakage, but that's less likely than a connection problem.

With the voltage reading of 2-4V when the engine is running, generally means that the lights are being back fed through something else instead of going to ground.
Check, check and triple check your earths, including the one on your alternator!

Well I checked earths and couldnt find anything wrong but now all side lights dont work! So - im assuming it is an earth problem - I took it to garage but they want Hundreds to sort it, so, can anyone recomend a good guide or video etc as to how to take everything back? I assume it means Im going to have to go on an adventure of re-wiring.

It was never going to be an earth problem as the brake lights and the rear side lights use the same earth, so if your brake lights work properly then the earth is OK, at the rear at least.
If you still have dash lights then it is unlikely to be the light switch, as the dash lights are on the same feed as the side lights.
I trust that you have checked the fuses, if they haven't blown, give the contacts a good clean as they can be temperamental.

Without removing the lens, how do you know if the brake light isn't 'earthing' through the tail light circuit, as both filaments would be glowing?
If in doubt, run another arth to the lamp and that should sort the problem out.
I know what you mean about the wiring loom going through the chassis, as on one of my previous Landies it got to a stage where I had so much spaghetti goiing everywhere, I encased the lot in plastic conduit!
However, you are nowhere near that stage ... yet!!
