The reverse gear seems to have gone on my '05 Td4 manual.

1-2-3-4-5 are fine, no probs, but in reverse when you let the clutch up you just get a grinding noise. Had the linkage checked over and ok'd, car is currently in garage having a gearbox strip down but the Getrag box is supposed to be fairly bullet proof? Gearbox specialist also said he could not find anything out of the ordinary but will proceed to change the reverse 'fork' just in case.

Strange thing is if you force it into reverse pretty brutally it goes.

Can this be IRD related or would I lose forward gears too?

Clutch and Master / Slave cylinder were all done last year. Also lost my reverse lights.

Please help before I need to remortgage my house!!

Perhaps as it goes in if forced the new selector will cure it, might pay to change reverse gear as well and check out thrust washers

Mines similar, sometimes it doesnt want to go into reverse so holding the gearstick with a bit of pressure in the reverse gear and allowing the car to roll an inch allows the reverse gear to click into place.

Its also a pain in the arse reversing and requires a tonne of revs to stop it stalling in reverse.

Got mine back from the garage yesterday, they put a new reverse selector fork and reverse gear in the gearbox and now its as good as new. No whirring in 3/4/5th either like I used to get. The only downside was the bill - £1200!

Where did they get the parts from to repair the Getrag manual gearbox???

I have a noisy gearbox and its a bearing gone inside the box so would love to rebuild it and put it back to good use but I can't find any spares for it anywhere!

strip it and get the bearing numbers ,other getrag boxes may share sam bearings or a bearing supplier if its not a special
