I have a td4 Auto, which has just developed a problem with reverse. All the forward gears work fine, but since yesterday, when I put it into reverse there is no power and it struggles to reverse. There has been no warning, it just happened. Does anyone have any ideas as to what this may be?

Just Checked, and the R is on the dash. Its almost as if its in neutral, then it struggles to pull backwards.

Is this straight back or turning off a driveway? Wondered if VCU was siezing up.

It's behaviour is indicative of a slipping reverse brake band.

None at all, I've had it about 4 months, and its run fine up until now. Problem only started on Friday evening. Deosnt look like anything has leakled onto the drive, and i cant see any signs of fluid leaking under the car.

Ok. Thought I'd ask as there's a bolt on the rear of the Jatco auto which looks like a level plug, but it's not. It holds the reverse (mechanism) brake band in place and many garages have undone it by mistake. Result is loss of reverse gear.

I Have checked the oil today which is Black, so I assume that that needs changing, all the other fluid levels seem okay. Its strange that this should just happen with no indications isnt it? The car runs fine in all forward gears.

How many miles is on it? Do you know when the auto fluid was changed or even if it was changed?
It's not sounding good tbh. The reverse brake band is one of the jobs that requires the box to come out :(
If you can feel slight drive then I'd guess that's where you problem is? If there is no drive then it's worth checking the resistance of the solenoid valves. Hippo did a write up on that ;)

box needs looking at wouldnt bother putting more oil in

When I said that the oil was black, I meant the engine oil.
With regards to the autobox oil, I couldn’t tell you as its not a user serviceable thing is it?
Would it be worth me having the oil changed, before I go and have the autobox replaced etc.

not replaced necessarily but condition found as black means transmission needs mechanical fix

The black oil was the engine oil, which to be honest is the same colour that it was when I bought it. The colour of this has nothing to do with the transmission fluid does it?

No. Transmission fluid is generally a red colour for the Jatco box.

So Does anyone think it would be a good idea to have the transmission fluid changed, before I end up having the gearbox replaced / rebuilt at the cost of around 1500+
I cant see how it would just stop working so quickly with no indication that there was a problem, whenever ive had gear issues in the past there were usually warning signs first.
