Hello, I am hoping someone can offer me some advice before I throw the teddies out of the pram

My reversing lights did not work so after some voltmetering I identified the reversing light switch (RVL) as the problem. I bought a new one after quoting my registration and screwed it in.

Now my reversing lights are on in Reverse, 3rd 4th and occasionally in neutral. (They are not on in 1st or 2nd)

They turn on if I short the loom prior to the RVL and off again. I have electrically protected the two wires from accidently shorting (in the area that I have been fiddling).

Have I been sold the wrong switch? are their different variants with subtle differences such as; lengths of the plunger, push to close the circuit/ push to open? Would dislodging the 1st gear switch effect the operation of the RVL?

Is there something that I have missed?

Many thanks in advance for any help

Have you even tried searching ? There are hardly any "new" issues that have not been dealt with here.....

Englishbullterrier, thanks for the link to the search, there are many conversations about reversing light switches.
I have found one which to refers to packing it out with a washer or two so I will try that.

When I put my new one in, the reverse lights were on all the time and the gear lever would not go into reverse at all - till i put a washer on ;)
If you compare new to old the new one will probably be a tad longer like mine was.

Thanks Brack
I will definitely try this tomorrow, I considered comparing them however with all the warnings that you would empty your gear box of oil, I just took the old one out and hastely put the new one in. In hind sight I am thinking I should have slowed down since the eruption of oil never happened.

I will post tomorrow proclaiming your genius if it works.

Hi chaps, It worked so Brack consider your genius proclaimed and don't let anybody tell you otherwise.

Apparently they do not sell washers with an hole larger than 1/2" in Bristol on a Sunday so I eventually filed one to fit.
Very impressed with my handy work so am now going to reverse everywhere, give us a wave if you see me.

Thanks again to you both :)
