Short circuit in the wiring?
Adjusting the reverse light switch is tricky - i took my bulb out.
If you screw it in too far, it either stays on or doesn't allow reverse to mesh properly, if you don't screw it in far enough it wont light the light unless you hold it right in gear. Im gonna put a switch on mine with a warning LED.
Check your ires for a short though as said above.

Follow the wiring and look closely where it goes through body panels etc. for wear of the insulation.
Also look for crush damage where the wiring is exposed or vulnerable.

That is very odd. I hadn't replied because I also suspected a switch problem. I don't know your history with this car, but I'm wondering if someone hasn't made a manual override somewhere.
I really can't see how it can be shorted, but, pull out one fuse at a time to find out which circuit is supplying the lamp and let me know.
Also, try turning the heated rear window switch off and on, because this is supposed to be the only other bit of stuff on the same fuse as the reverse light.
