I'm found a Land Rover for sale I quite like the look of. It needs welding and I'd like to respray it, I can't find anyone local who will return my phone calls to get a quote, as I don't want to buy without getting a idea of cost.

Could anyone give me a steer? Looking at total respray and semi-major welding on the chassis.

Paint is cosmetic, what's the engine and gear box like?

I can quantify the cost of that, its the respray which on my last two Defenders I haven't had done and so have no idea where to begin when pricing it up.

Gearbox looks like its seen better days but engine has done 134,000 miles and runs well. The starter motor will probably need replacing though as been sitting in a barn last 6 months and in my experience the brushes will go.

How long is a piece of string ? Some pics of the welding needed on the chassis may help.

+1 on the pics...

semi-major welding on the chassis.

Given that it will be worse than it looks - it always is - then I'd suggest that semi major repair is ill advised - a new galv chassis is preferable IME... and will increase the value of the thing significantly.

Welding will be ALOT. Better off buying a welder and trying yourself. Isn't that hard with abit of practice especially using fed welders. The only on I think is hardish is stick and that's not too bad after a few goes with a decent welder. Wouldn't use that for a chassis though. As disco said if it's bad rot might be better off with a galv chassis. Especially if getting it sprayed will make it mint then.
I've been quoted 1200 to get my 90 prepped filled and sprayed. It's mostly stripped already though.
You can pick up galv chassis for random prices. 1k to alot more really depends where from. Sometimes catch em cheaper if you manage to buy one someone got for a project and gave up
