Seen this a couple of times and it was both just lack of use. Have a shufty from below and see how much crud and ****e is topping the levers from moving over ... might also be able to do it from above if you feel like taking the interior apart.

You can engage diff-lock at anytime, or disengage it, on the move, reversing etc. Often just moving for a couple of feet and dipping the clutch will bring it into engagement, or moving forward then into reverse.

Mine sometimes feels like it needs to move 'twice', mostly after deep mud or dust, so you may just need to 'play' a while, with the Disco moving, and try to push it in hard. (oo-er missus) Keep up some pressure on the lever as you move forward, dip the clutch and move off again, keeping pressure on the lever.

On my 90 diff lock is always a bitch.

Usually solved by releasing the clutch to biting point in 1st or 2nd then waggleing the hi - low in the general direction of lock.

Decided though on the re-build arb's are being fitted :D

Right I'm a bit of a newbie to the way the Diffs work on the landy's from the drivers perpesctive.

If I slap her (my disco) into diff lock should my diff lock warning light on the dash be lit all the time? or will it only light when the diff is doing work?

thanks guys

Munster, The difflock when engaged will always be at work, provided there is drive through the gearbox or rotation of the axles.

It is a mechanical way of negating the center differential completeley and simutaniously applying equal amounts of rotation to both the back and front axles.

the light on the dash should reflect it's state: engaged or dis-engaged.

it is not an electronic thing like Traction Control which kicks in when needed

Thanks mate, sorry I worded my question very badly. What I meant was will it only light when the vehicle is in motion?

Only if your lucky and the wiring or bulb arn't shot.

Never seen the lock light on my 90 working and can't be bothered to trce the fault.

Ah cheers Monkey, my lock light ain't coming on either. Tyres doing plenty of scrubbing though (just driving on gravel to test) so I think the diff is locking ok.
