I have a 2000 Discovery TD5 and am changing the water pump. Difficult access. I have the nice detailed directions. But my question is do I need to empty the engine oil in order to remove the oil filter to have better access to the bolts? I mean the lower filter. Will the engine oil flood out if I take it out temporarily?:

Thanks. Now I've come across another problem. The two bolts holding the Rotor Filter cover on are rusted and won't turn. They're even a little rounded off.
 
Try a Snap-On hexagon socket, or any make that claims to have a "flank drive".

Failing that there are special sockets available that have a slow helix left hand thread inside them. They might work.

Don't put the old bolts back in of course.

Only if fitted by a gorilla. It never ceases to amaze me why "mechanics" tighten nuts/bolts to within an inch of their lives. Surely the clue is in the size of the nut/bolt head. 10mm, not much torque and in this case the rubber sealing ring does most of the work.
I'm currently struggling to remove the D2 bottom shock absorber bolts which some animal has managed to round off. I'd try oxy/acc but the s/abs is too close. May end up cutting the bracket off, then heat but that means taking the shock off entirely which in turn means removing the shock tower to replace the bottom mount which in turn leads to seized tower bolts. Broken springs. Oh the joys of Landrovers. Given up for now.
