I have an oil leak from the end of the steering box on my 300TDi Defender.
Can anyone tell me if changing the box for a recon one is easy or difficult.

Steve.

Easy job.
4 bolts
2 pipes
1 steering bolt on column
1 steering arm
1 nut by panard rod
If all goes well less 1 hour

How good are you with spanners?

You can undo the jubilee clip of the reservoir.easy to remove when box is off. the other pipe will come off with the box in place.
Make sure you have the correct spanner & it's a nice tight fit. Do not round them off.

Your quick @jamesmartin

I forget myself sometimes. ;)
Working on too many comp safaris.
And my time permitted to do the jobs were 30mins
I'm glad your here to guide us all

Many thanks gents, I will order a recon box and do it.
Do you by any chance know whether removal of an EGR will make my Defender fail the new MOT.

New MOT regs are 20th May so if it is removed might be worth getting it tested early gets you 12 months grace then

I know @jamesmartin mentioned that the steering box is heavy already but it's worth mentioning again, they are very heavy!
It helps to have another pair of hands especially when refitting.
Trying to hold the bugger up and get the bolts in on your own is a faff and it hurts if it drops and clocks you one!
