hi all,
Today i attempted to change my rear EAS air springs, the instructions seem like a very simple process and it was until i had to remove the upper EAS spring locator. i used the long nose pliers to griip and pull the retainer but it just snapped and the same happened on the other side. i tried using mould grips to pull out the pin but it only snapped leaving only about 5mm of the pin remaining and on the other side there is still 15mm.
I put everything back together and am hoping u experts are out there to help.
Please advise how i can get the top end of the air springs off.
PS i too have bought Arnott grade 2 as replacements.

i had the same thing happen, had to bend the remaining metal til it snapped, didn't take long,as it was quite corroded

"bend the remaining metal" please explain because if your refering to the retaining pin the its stuck in the air spring and i cannot pull it out.
are you saying leave the pin inside and take the lower retaining pin off and just pull and wiggle the air bag off/out until the upper pin just breaks/gives -in

im having thse problems with the top retaining clips
iv come across this problem and havent even tried the bottom ones

if thet are alu in the bottom then you just nook a chisel in between the bottom of the spring and car ..

the upper i would use a saw blade and cut the top of where the clip sits

When I replaced my rear airbags a couple of years ago I ended up chiseling out the top plastic part of the old airbags literally piece by piece with a lump hammer. They were fused solid to the chassis. The clips came out OK as I remember using a bent coat hanger as mentioned.
When you have got the old parts off make sure there are no weld beads on the chassis that can rub against your new Arnott bags. There was an issue with earlier cars rubbing against the rubber causing them to fail prematurely. If so grind it smooth.

ok thanks for the info guys, i will have a go on monday because i have just bought the rear clips off ebay (i know i should have got them in the first place) and im hoping they will arrive on tuesday.
will keep you posted.
ps it was not all bad, i did manage to replace my rear discs with drilled and grooved tera..sumthing ones and ebc green stuff.

o i also read that someone put a breaker bar in between the chassis and the head of the air spring and just broke into the top resulting in success

I have just changed all four on a P38 and it was more awkward than the rears I changed on a classic.
I gassed off the bottom clips and bust off the rear top clips.

Hi, Did mine this week. Get a 2ft jemmy. Jam it in and swing on it for the bottom fitting, the plastic will give quite quickly. For the top jam it in (look out for the brake pipes on one side and the air lines on both sides) and swing on it again - you'll bend the metal wheel arch sheeting a tad but that'll bend back and be good again with some oil/waxoil. The pins and plastic soon give with a bit of grunt.
