I need to replace my uj bearings on the front prop gearbox end. I am thinking of doing it by only removing the broken end, has anyone tried this or got any objections?

chances are the other end will be just as knackered.do em both for less than a score.:welcome2:

What goonarmy said. It's also feckin' difficult to do them in situ, compared to taking the whole prop off.

thanks, took it off last night put into diff lock now I have a click on clutch on clutch off, plus is the rear diff locked in the center for now?. hoping to sort it, should i be thinking of a new tranfer box or should I recondition it?

If you've took the rear prop off and put the gears into diff-lock then all that's being driven are the front wheels. There is no diff-lock in the rear, unless you've fitted one, as standard, and as there's no prop there's no drive to the rear wheels at all.

As for the 'click' .. well you have a brake drum rotating now, and it's likely out of balance .. when I had to do the same it made awful noises, soon as prop put back all quiet again!

I wouldn't have thought the transfer box needs anything doing so long as it was just a UJ gone .. unless you've run it hundreds of miles with a nackered UJ and the vibes might have killed the seals/bearings .. but that's not normally the case.

When you buy the uj's , don't go for the cheapest, get a good make , some of them are crap .

replaced the uj no prob, took about an hour to change and refit, developed a vibration so I figures it is out of balance because I didn't tippex it, no I was wrong everything was fine At first) and I wasn't worried much because I decided to change the whole prop, I was driving along wondering whether I would have any problems with balance with the new one when while overtaking a truck the 'new' uj gave up, :mad:great front prop of by the road side and now its back shopping for a new front prop, I love my disco, the wife said call it Stu, (disco Stu from the simpson she said) I said it sucked as a name but now I not so sure

I love my landy cause I love grease under my fingernails,

New uj's don't just " give up " it must have been fitted incorrectly or the end of the prop was worn/damaged.

It is not possible to fit the item incorrectly, thanks for that comment but I know how to fit a uj, and yes they do just give up if faulty 3o years of farming have taught me that, this item was a joke it fractured through poor casting, the prop is fine. Glad to have such supportive forum members

this item was a joke it fractured through poor casting, that why its always better to buy OE quality - you don't have to go to the stealers for this either, not for uj's.

you have my sympathy though - owt get broke when it failed?

:welcome2:

Thanks, no the thing broke, grumbled I dipped the clutch and got to the side of the road quick, not that dipping the clutch helps I suppose but I tried it stayed up and just held in, so no damage, I have now got a oe prop coming wednesday so I will be out of diff lock then, gotta love my disco I waited long enough. Just need to get weling my series three now
:D
