reet so i have ordered a replacement edc pump on ebay and its just been delivered.

is replacing it with the special pully holding tool fingy in the timing kit the exact same as doing the job with a manual pump?

just checking :eek: ive seen quite a few videos of using this but none doing it on an edc pump is all :)
 
The two pumps are almost identical in terms of fitment - pulleys etc are the same, and interchangeable. I just took my EDC system off - cos it was (very) broken, and fitted a mechanical pump in its place. Reason being, parts availability is very poor - the needle lift sensor in number four injector is NLA. So, please be aware that if or when this dies, you have something of an issue.....

And I am not trying to be a harbinger of doom - just being realistic
 
aye i intend to replace it with a manual one in the long term, (ive seen all the how too's) but in the short term i bought her this disco as her l200 runs out of mot next week and she needs a car to get about in. As the EDC pump is peeing diesel out the back of it it seems logical to just get it replaced and up and running and sorting out the manual stuff later :)
 
ok so i have checked over the replacement edc pump and it hasnt been "locked" like what i have seen on several youtube vids. Is this a problem? Or do i just time it up like normal?
 
it only has to be locked while the flange is off, yours should have the flange fitted ready to go.
 
well thats the pump replaced, its the first time i have worked "properly" on a diesel so i was a little apprehensive but actually with the proper timing pin kit and locking set it was pretty easy (if a little fiddly)

diesel is no longer leaking which has to be a good thing, also found the leak off from the injectors had snapped so i have sorted that.

Rather worryingly there was a LARGE amount of aluminium swarf when the cover to the fuel pump pulley was removed.

HOWEVER

it still wont start ... the new pumps fuel stop solenoid is busted, ive also found the one on the old pump is busted....

which is probably why it never started before and the diesel leak on the pump was just "another" problem

DOH! I had put 12v to the old one and heard it click so thought it was ok, after trying to rob it for the replacement pump i found the plunger was no longer attached and so was effectively failed in the off position. how annoying

Just off to DA autoparts who are open to late this afternoon who reckon they have one. I am going to get this sodding car running today!!!!
 
sounds like the timing belt is rubbing, not long before the belt snaps and you have busted camshaft/valves to sort out.

Personally i would not be starting it until i have investigated the belt issue further.

I just want it to start before i did the belt so i could at least be happy that its a "runner"
 
If you are sure the solenoid is opening??Loosen injection pump inlet banjo and with ignition on-pump lift pump to prime fuel to injection pump-retighten banjo.Then loosen return line banjo(back of pump)and pump again until diesel flows.... this way you should have diesel all the way through the injection pump.Now loosen injectors and crank over on battery to make sure diesel is getting to injectors.?Tighten everything up.crank over and she should fire if timing is alright.I would guess you are just playing with airlocks at mo

Just picked it up. 740 notes with long mot just 112 thousand miles. Loads of history and it drives great!
 
It's been looked after. It's shown me how awful the tdi in my defender is running though. :Cry:

Good call though - almost no electronics to cause problems.!!
 
that bloody edc was doing my tree in. Im thinking i should have just converted it to a manual pump.

Never mind!

I dont really want to break the poor green un as its still got plenty of mot and its in really nice condition! but it is worth more to for just a few of the bits than what i paid for the whole she bang!
 
Your call, but an "ex" EDC auto, with a long MOT, and if its in reasonable condition??? - got to be worth a few $$

Have a think about de EDCing it - it might be financially worth it, and it keeps another disco on the road!!
 
Right then, so swap the pump and injectors over!!!! ....

This is essentially what I did... I bought a scrap one, and have de EDC'd "mine" using the bits...
