As mentioned from my other thread I have a 1989 Ford F250 4x4 7.3L Deisel
with front axle problems (see other thread. <Front axle questionfor an
F250>) Since I am new to this NG I apologize if I am repeating an old
question. What am I getting myself into if I want to go from an IFS Dana 44
to a solid axle version? A bolt in situation (would be nice, but doubtful)
or rebuild the entire truck? For example, will the steering knuckles outward
just bolt onto the new axle or is everything getting chucked out the window
and I start anew?

Thanks, in advance, for your time.

Dan

BTW, it should be a Dana 50 in front of that truck (it does use a lot of
44 parts though, it just has a bit heavier housing.

When getting the parts from Knecht's, the local parts store chain, this was
the big question. Is it a 44 or a 50? Both came in that pickup. The only way
to tell was to tear into it. It is a 44 when comparing the parts to the
manual. Also the 44 bearings fit, not the 50's. For this reason I believe it
must be a 44. Other sources since have kinda leaned towards the 44,
including a local front end specialist. I guess the only way to know that I
know would be to cross check the VIN with FoMoCo. I suppose there would be a
place on the net to do that. I just haven't, yet. I will if I need to,
though. Kinda curious what else it may tell me....

The 50 uses same ring and pinion as a 44 and should be same wheel
bearing. The 50 just has a slightly heavier housing and slightly bigger
axle shafts too.
