Hi, 2.5 DSE (2000 spec),

Car is completely standard, at the moment, looks like intercooler is damaged by buffoon of a previous owner.

As i need to replace, has anyone used one of these universal jobbies:

Universal Intercoolers

Had good success with them on a passat, but that didnt mean as much to me as this beastie does.

The pipe inlets on the diesel intercooler come out 90 degrees to the body, pointing towards back of car, probably be easier to fit a standard one ,
 
You could fit an Allisport intercooler for the p38. Big power increase combined with the right chip. Well made and relatively easy to fit. Occasionally come up cheap on Ebay.
 
A garage in Pickering is breaking a baby blue P38 derv and selling the parts pretty cheap (I got my full facelift conversion for £100). If you give Pure Car Mechanic a bell they'll probably give you a decent price on the IC.
 
An uprated intercooler is a waste of money in our climate. It will come into it's own about five days a year. Just make sure the standard one is clean internally.
 
I'm going bigger as I'm planning to up the boost slightly.

OK but a hobby like that is almost the same as enjoying throwing £20.00 notes into a fire.
 
not really a waste of time on an engine that cracks heads! anything that lowers iat temps is a good thing!

it'll have no effect on engine temperature.

Sorry, just realised that iat wasn't a typo for it's.

IAT in this climate is not a problem. Specially on a workhorse engine such as the M51 as fitted to the P38. High IAT means less fuel is used. Low IAT means more fuel is used. That gives an higher EGT. That is the head cracker.
 
fair point but with higher boost pressures a must, i beleave thats what jeremy fearn does as part of his conversion
 
The problem is there isn't much space to fit a larger intercooler.
The Allisport one I fitted fits behind the main radiator like the original but drops down lower between the chassis rails with the engine oil cooler swapped over above it. There is no need to disconnect the oil pipes. The turbo pipe runs are also straight forward - just a few 50mm silicone elbows and straight sections.
My engine was already chipped and the larger ic has given it a further performance increase. It is quite noticeable.

Stick a Jeremy Fern up grade on an engine that has done 120,000 miles and see how long it lasts. If you start playing excessively with an engine that has the normal mileage for even the most recent P38, you are asking for something to blow up.
 
thing is kinda missing the point agree 197bhp upgrade on an old engine isnt the best idea prob will blow up, but some people like to modify things to see what they can get out of it same as a 1000bhp toyota supra is it reliable nope! but it is a hobby i like restoring triumph spitfires some people cant see the point in that but it is my choice.
there is no need to be down on everyone who comes on here and wants to tinker with it end of the day range rover p38 is down to discovery money these days so more people can play with them like they do old discos.

Hey Nath if you want to play by all means do so. I have an old Porsche to play with but i am happy with 320 BHP. So don't plan any engine mods. I fitted Hillman Imp HC pistons in to 1100 block that went like stink in my Mini. I also used to build engines for rally cars, but that is a long time ago. I found sometimes that playing can cost you a lot of money. I tend to leave things alone these days. Try to give advice to people who may not have the experience i have, that sometimes leaving well alone is a good policy. But they seldom take any notice and when things go tits up very rarely come back and admit it. :):)
 
As I recall with the ZF22, if you're going to increase the power your engine squeezes out, you might want to keep 4 or 5 spare because they have a tendency to **** the bed.

Yeah the one way clutches do have an habit of turning inside out.
