Hi

I am looking at going the whole hog and not only refurbishing the engine but getting the gearbox sorted while I have everything in bits.

The gearbox I have is fine except it is difficult to change from 1st in to 2nd.

I have looked at various options in to getting an replacement gearbox and there are a few options out there, on the good old bay of E there are a few companies selling ex MOD refurbished ones, does anyone have any experience with these or am I better sending the one I have to a company who can refurbish it for me?

Have Ashcrofts got any better as they were having a few problems I believe.

Any help most appreciated as always.

Ivan

Sorry, I'm missing something. Which gearbox, engine, etc.?

I find if you can get past the officious secretary's to Dave himself then Ashcroft's are of some use (except the prices). However I generally get frustrated and do the refurb myself. Main problem is the fabrication on the tooling to pull various collars off, etc., but both the LT77 and the R380 are relatively straightforward to work on if you're careful and clean. Guess you'll probably find the syncro' on 2nd is getting a bit weak.

Use the powers of summoning him @jamesmartin ;)

One day you'll get this back on the road :D

I have sent the main man a request to see if he is interested. One day it will indeed be done and I will be happy, as it is I am going around replacing or repairing everything so it will be new. lol.

You'll be scared to drive it incase you scratch it:p

It already has plenty of scratches on it, I just want the thing drivable again one day without me worrying what is going to fall of or destroy itself next. One I can do that I will worry about paint lol

Isn't that an oxymoron? Owning a defender and not having a list of jobs waiting to be done, mine's like the forth bridge  I have various jobs waiting and various time lines to being bothered to sort it out :p

Surely the whole joy of having a Defender is to have a list of jobs to do that means you can lie outside in the cold and the wet and the dark... Having said that I'm now waiting for the weather to improve before finishing the spray job - might be waiting a long time I guess!
