Today work started on the bulkhead repairs on my new 200Tdi.
It turned out to be not as bad as I expected once the rust was cut away.

Ribbed roof removed as it was not the correct one and was hideous. The county roof is ready to fit.

Drivers door is very new and in good condition but the passenger door will need a repair kit and welderising.

Spare wheel removed from the bonnet which is in pretty good nick too considering its had the spare on there for years.

Just making long lists of bits that need purchasing when I get me another job. :eek: or sell Gloria :)

Didn't get much done today as I spent half of it on the phone about jobs here there and everywhere. Think I might have 4 weeks work lined up, I should know tomorrow.

Anyway no photos today as I've been rust removing and I don't think anyone needs to see a pic of the underside of the bonnet. That's ready now for a liberal coating of red oxide.

Me old Dad has been in his element fabricating his own repair panels for the bulkhead. Its obvious now that there has been a poor patch attempt made in the past. Also raked out masses of expanding foam from inside.

I'm on a parts run tomorrow and a telephone interview so won't get to the workshop til latter.

I've been playing Land Rovers today and here is the progress so far.

Bulkhead repairs complete and first coat of primer applied.

Jobs still to do are.... repair passenger door - a bit of welding but unusually not in the normal place :confused:

There is a little surface rust on the drivers and back door that I'll be attending to tomorrow.

Lots of sanding and prepping for painting and then it put it all back together.

There will be lots of bits and pieces to do inside but I'll do that after its back on the road its mostly just trim, seats, etc.

Thanks, but most has been my Dads handy work. :eek: He has done a really good job all rust removed and plenty of new metalwork welded in. We're gonna waxoyl it all inside after its painted so should last for years

In hindsight perhaps that would have been a good Idea to replace the whole bulkhead. It wouldn't have taken so long but would have cost lots more. Work is a bit erratic and money is tight at the mo so needs must. :(
 
wow!!! that is good work there.... your dad can come over and repair mine, there's bubbling in places but i wont even dare touching it...
 
The bulkhead is now finished.

All welding complete on the passenger door and undercoated, driver's door needs straightening as the door check strap was missing and the door has been kinked.

that looks really good!

was the bulkhead repaired just by welding patches of metal? bend, etc and weld? or ready made section bought somewhere?

mine is seriously bubbling in the areas yours has been repaired, but i dont even dare touching it... will leave if for summer next year to repair it.

I bought the repair sections but they weren't used as the rot wasn't in the usual places. It was done be cutting in custom plates cut and bent to size\shape. One side was bad around the vent and the other wasn't too bad but under the bonnet lip was bad on both sides. We found that it had been repaired before but badly and had masses of filler, fibre glass, expanding foam and all sorts. All work works done with the wings on.

Lucky for me that my Dad has been in the motor trade all his life and is pretty
handy with restorations. He did a full restoration on my old MGB down to bare metal, resprayed and did a stage II engine tune, camshaft, etc bored out to just under 2 litres. Its was a really nice bit work pretty darn quick, sounded awesome and handled pretty well for something on leaf springs.

I get my love of mechanical things from my Dad. :D.

I'd say for yours I'd clean it up and see what you need first as I went ahead and bought stuff that wasn't used. Even a door repair section that wasn't needed either.
 
I wont even bother with door repairs, mine are almost gone, there's no bottom on the doors anymore, just rust or nothing at all.. when I replace them I'm going for series door as I like the lift handles.

right, next year I'll be taking mine to your dad then! :D

You can buy the top hat section to repair the lower door frame its a relatively easy job to do I think there's a guide on here somewhere if you search for it. New or second hand doors are frighteningly expensive so it's worth having a go at repairing yours.

you dont understand.. theres nothing left of the door bottom, basically its just the outer skin there..

yeh I bought a 4ft length of the top hat shape section from my local indi' for about £5 and used just about all of it to repair my passenger door bottom.
