Thanks for the tip, lost the wire last night and was about to purchase complete regulator since I thought diy repairs not possible. Let you know how I get on.

Further to my earlier post, anyone know the design background of the Freelander? Don't say it doesn't have one either. Just that the regulator I took out of the driver's door this afternoon is badged up VW, at least the motor is.
 
Don't know about regulators but I have browsed flebay and replaced the whole window mech with second hand one for £17. It came with regulator and motor and work absolutely fantastic. Looking just now for a tailgate one as sometimes it struggles to wind window up. Hopefully my bargain hunting skills won't dissapoint me .

My experience with the repair kits is both good and bad. Replaced two rears and both fine, replaced one front and it lasted a week, replaced a 2nd and it didn't fit so bought a regulator instead.
Replacing the whole regulator (without motor) can be an issue too. First one I did the gear that the motor was meant to engage with was off centre so I really struggled getting the motor in. 2nd one was OK and the motor went in no problem.
Now if doing a front I use the regulator, if a rear I'll use a kit.
 
Yeh thanks for the tip Alibro. Found out the hard way, bought the diy kit as opposed to made up wires and it lasted 3 operations of the window!!
Now waiting for a new regulator to arrive. BTW have you heard of Flying 8 Motor Co in Norwich? They claim to deal in new LR parts but never came across them before.

Thanks Lucas, had to go the same way after the repair lasted 3 operations of the window!! Bummer

I have emailed the seller on ebay and he said there is about 4% of Freelanders that have different stop ends, if you find you have this problem he will send the correct ends foc.
I have checked his feedback and found loads of Freelander kits have been sold with positive feedback! Has any one had success with this kit. I have ordered both kits as I don't want to spend hundreds of pounds on replacement window regulators.
I fitted a new o/s/r door window regulator about two weeks ago at a cost of over £70, the old regulator wire was bent and twisted and the top plastic wire guide was broken, the motor is OK, I might try and repair it with the kit, if any one knows where you can get the plastic wire guides from that would be helpful.

Please reply with your thoughts good or bad.

Picking up on a really old post of yours about the regulator repair kit from e-crofting on fleabay. How did you get on with it, any success?

I've fitted loads of window cable kits. I've never had a problem with them. The most important thing to remember, is window alignment. If the window drive pads and channels aren't lined up correctly, the strain breaks the cable;)

Thanks Nodge, haven't opened the door internals after the last incident just taped up the window. About to leave for UK and haven't got the time to find out what went this time, but will dismantle on return and report. That said, when I finished the repairs everything looked right and the window sat evenly in both clamps so it will be interesting to see what has gone when I open it up.

Where do you get your kits Nodge? I've had a couple that either didn't fit at all or fell apart because they were slightly loose.

It's been in there 12 months and still works as it should.
I fitted the same kit to my old V6 4 year's ago and it's still fine.
I've used a few different suppliers over the years. All have worked fine except for the first one I did. I think that failed because I hadn't set the glass correctly.
I also lubricate the window channels with silicone grease. This makes them slide smoothly and lowers the stresses on the cable.
