hi ive been trying to remove my steering wheel on my 1987 110. after removing the retaing nut i firstly tried to pull it off....no success.
next i tried to fabricate a puller as it says in good old haynes manual....no success. i can only imagine its so hard because it hasnt been removed since it was put on 22 years ago!

the problem with the fabricated puller if you are aware of the device is that the thread keeps on getting sheared off and the bolt is then useless. does anybody have any ideas? i really need to get it off asap!

Leave steering wheel nut on so the thing doesn't hit yu in the face when it come off. Get a solid bit of steel bar/box section and drill 2 holes to line up with the 2 holes in the steering wheel. put a nut on the bolts and wind all the way on. then place them thru the bar/box steel and wind 2 bolts in to the wheel Once they've bottomed out wind the nuts down until they reach the bar/box and tighten alternately and strike the bar in the centre repeat until the wheel comes loose.
 
Try using hardened bolts instead of the cheap soft crap from your DIY store.
It will eventually come loose but as Red says leave the steering wheel nut on unless you want a busted nose. I cant count the times I've seen peeps smash their own faces removing steering wheels.
 
hunners of wd40 first leave for a while then hit the net squarley but firmly and then pull
and i hope you know the name of the big nut behind the steering wheel
 
When ye do get it off, a wee dab of copper grease probably wouldn't go a miss... makes it easier the next time;)
 
if you do a search on e-bay for land rover steering wheel there is a pukka land rover wheel puller on there. Just noticed it tonight while I was searching for a new wheel for my truck.

Leave the nut in place, then grab the wheel at the 9 and 3 o'clock positions, push your feet into the footwell then pull & wiggle (side to side) the wheel like crazy!

it'll come loose eventually... it's on a tapered spline, so once it's loose it'll pop straight off.
 
thanks for all the help guys. after trying all the above options (apart from the ebay wheel remover, lack off cash atm) i finally got it off with one big hit from a rubber mallet! not ideal but it worked woohoo!
1 step closer to a fixed landy and a happy driver!

I made an adaptor to to fit the two holes on the steering wheel and that then attached to a slide hammer;) Works every time,first time!
 
one good , meaningfull clout with a hammer, plastic thor type to the center, hit it like yer mean it ! only once is enough to rattle it loose !
 
it's an old thread but i thought I'd add to it. I've just been trying to get mine off, and almost had a hernia. I just can't get any decent leverage by sticking my feet in the footwell. Someone mentions a puller that can be fabricated. I have two different sets of workshop manuals for my 90, but not the Haynes. Both manuals I have just mention using a "suitable puller". Does anyone have details on the Haynes idea of a suitable puller, and how I can fabricate one?

What a nightmare. I just want a nice indicator stalk that stays indicating without holding it in, also stays on full beam without holding it in, and I noticed that the new one even auto-cancels :O
