The turbo on my 300 tdi failed & the debris bent a con-rod. No visible marks on the head or piston but the con-rod has a slight bend. Can the piston & con-rod on a 300tdi normally be removed by sliding up the bore or does it need to go downwards?

The engine ran on the sump oil. I assumed that the head gasket had gone but on inspection the turbo bearing had failed. One half (small bronze bush) was in the oil line rest must have gone through No1 cylinder. Not a mark on the head or piston but the piston is now 2mm lower than No 4 with a slight S bend in the con-rod. Not sure I can remove it up the bore. Might get away with one new con-rod & a turbo. The turbo fins are chewed up but the casing looks OK.
 
that is a major engine overhaul then. cos yu gorra replace all the crank seals an stuff. identify every item so yu know exactly where they go back.

mite be easier and cheaper to get a new short engine.
 
I am suprised that if there is only a 2mm diff, that yo can not get the piston out through the top.
If thats possible, maybe (a big maybe) yo might just get away with wot yo suggest.
Whilst it is possible sometimes to get away with such an economy fix (bodge),
I would go for the full rebuild, as per mhm recommendation.
 
Got the piston out, bit tight but no scoring. Con-rod is bent but although big end bearing is showing the copper no visible damage to crank. Need to source a new shell set & con-rod. The on-line suppliers don't seem to list con-rods. Anyone tried overhauling a turbo themselves? I guess balancing will be the challenge?

Hmmmm...... I think you should be doing a bit more checking before spending money on this engine.

Check the BLOCK for bursts around main bearings especially.

It all sounds suspicious to me still.

should the pistons come out the top easily enough then? Will there not be a ridge at top of bore and the rings will hit that? Sorry but it was 1987 when I last did a full rebuild of a lump (a t reg Cavalier I think!)
 
No problems there.
Pistons and rings will pop out the top of the block easily.
The rings will jump any ridge that may be there.

You MUST replace the pistons from the top anyway using a ring clamp and a hammer. Good fun that!

You can never REALLY be sure that you haven't broken a ring!
How would you be able to tell without taking the piston out to look?
And then you have to bash it in again .... and this time, again, did you break a ring?
