Hi, I've looked at the other thread regarding exhaust mods. I live in Gibraltar and a local company are willing to remove the cats and centre box for me as I've requested a straight through pipe. I only use the car off road and want the smiles per gallon effect. If I remove the Cats, will I have to get the ECU reprogrammed or will it run ok?????

Classic Kev or Teflon usually has the answer but if anyone has done this mod I would be pleased to hear from you.

had my rr classic done. de cat exhaust, removed egr valve, and had bigger intercooler. Allisport did the work to a very high standard. Hope that helps
 
If we are talking V8 petrol then the tune resistor in the ECU needs to be changed to a Saudi tune as they don't have cats in that country. By removing the mid box u may find a problem because of the lack of back pressure.
I change my cat back exhaust to a tuned Janspeed system so it now has a brilliant sound/tone and no probs due to the lower back pressure just a better throttal responce.
 
you may have to relocate the o2 sensors, im not sure about land rovers, but we do this with Audi's all the time. to need to move the O2 sensor or it will throw a Check engine light. are you going to gut the stock cats, or just put in custom straight downpipes?

reason i ask is i use lpg so have no need for the cats, one has come loose and rattles, i dont fancy welding the pipes as they never last and a full replacement is a bit pricey this side of xmas

what method do/did you use or know of??

yes we do it in the audi's just for that reason to make it LOOK stock if you are getting a car inspected they look under it and see "o ok the catalytic converters are there"
this is free. just takes some time and patience

Now ive never done this on a land rover but
we take the down pipe off, and if you are good at cutting and welding people will cut the cat open and cut out the cat filter and pre cat, and weld back together. or my method you remove the downpipe and pry and grind away at the cat + and pre cats until it is empty. here is a diy wright up for an audi B5 S4

Had mine fully de-catted, (the two pre-cats in the 'Y' section, and the main cat itself), whilst also having a custom stainless 'Y' piece made up and the rear silencers sleaved.

It didn't make any noticable differance to fuel econamy, it did help the engine run a little cooler, and it did make it sound a lot better without sounding hollow or tinny. It also popped and banged on the over-run a lot more, and I reckon liberated a few extra horses.

I'm sure I saw an article on Rangerovers.net on how to empty the cats.

Current thinking is that this has been done to mine. Unfortunately it sounds a bit horrible. I assumed it had a cracked manifold, but it went to the garage yesterday and their conclusion was that the cats had been emptied - nothing wrong with the manifolds. It makes a echoing clattery noise which I find really irritating but not quite enough to make me buy new cats yet.

Since it's just passed an MOT I assume that emmisions aren't a problem (lpg).

that will be back pressure loss causing fluctuating lambda sensor readings:doh:
