Hi, just bought my first freelander and its great. Except it only has one key and fob.

Called the local dealer and I nearly called an ambulance when they told me the price of the key...£94.75...and the Fob...£70.00 including programming.

There has simply got to be an easy way around this....HELP.

Either just use one key....an a housebrick handy incase you lose it

or buy another key

I've got an old 2 button remote in very good condition, you can have for the postage. Dont know if it can be programmed to suit yours cheaper than a new remote.
Just meaasge me if you want it
Think it was from the wife's 03 Freelander

Would really appreciate that..let me know how we do it.

Yeah, I got the same problem here. I only got one set of keys for my Freelander but apparently if you get the keys copied with the standard car keys (ones without the Code Thingy bit in the key), you'll be able to unlock the doors but you won't be able to drive your Freelander.

And plus...I'm not that surprised the about the cost of secondary keys, everything you get from Land Rover (including BG Land Rovers (near Ross-on-Wye) and Hereford Land Rover) is very often a RIP----OFF----!!!!

suggested trick on later models was to get the key cut (two copies) then glue the original key inside the steering column shroud. that way the immobiliser search coil could always see the chip inside the original key, and could be started with a copy key.

Does defeat the immobilser principle slightly, but the person trying to steal your vehicle would have to know before hand when thinking about stealing it. This may not work on early versions, on which the immobilser was disabled by it being opened by the fob not the key. easy to check, leave the fob in the house, open the door with the key and see if it starts.

Don't think you specified what year your vehicle is, mine is a 98 MY and the key is not part of the remote so the pair probably come cheaper than later models. On early models (98-2001) the "Transponder" is in the remote, this means you can have a key made without going to the "Stealers" which leaves the remote at about £40-£50, luckily I am a retired auto electrician and have "contacts" in the trade in Birmingham, Best of luck anyway.
