Hi guys

just been doing some research on the d 2 td5 auto box ( being sluggish ) and found out that the td5 auto box is the same as used in the jaguar xjs 3.6 auto ( 4hp22 ) the td5 engine is 135 bhp and the xjs 3.6 engine is 225 bhp so obviusly the td5 engine is well under powered for the auto box, a std remap takes the td5 engine to 170 bhp or there abouts but to get better performance from the engine and box is a stage 2 remap a better way to go, don't know what the bhp will be with a stage 2 remap but reckon it will be around the 190- 200 bhp mark which would make the auto box work better, what do you think.

IMHO the gearbox doesnt have to do as much with the bhp than with the torque........ and when we speak about torque i wouldnt compare a diesel engine with a petrol one......By the way do u think that the 4.0 V8 Disco with ZF4HP22 autobox has less "power" with his 185 bhp than a jag with is 225:confused:
.
U'll never get the "nerv" on fast starts or kickdown of a petrol engine on a diesel one even if u doubleremap it:D:rolleyes:...........;)....I mean with quite similar weight and bhp characteristics

Hi Graham, I have a 2002 auto that I recently had remapped to stage one and it has made all the difference in the world to how the car drives now.

However, if you are thinking along the lines of a stage II remap with a new intercooler that starts to cost big money and starts to push the engine much more.

I would say that if a stage I remap is not enough for you and you want greater performance then maybe you should think about another car.

Some facts:

Disco TD5 weighs 2250kgs

Std TD5 engine gives 138bhp = 61.33bhp per ton

Stage I engine gives approx 170bhp = 75.55bhp per ton

Additional Power losses due to permanent 4 wheel drive = 20%-ish

As you can see, no Discovery is going to be a road-burner unless you throw LOTS of money at it.

sorry sierrafery i didn't know the v8 used the same auto box, i used to have an xjs v12 and have been in a few xjs 3.6s and aswell as the v12 if you just title the 3.6 it goes so when i found out they used the same box in the d 2 td5 i just thought thats why, the engine is too under powered obviusly i was wrong i get mixed up with torque and bhp:eek:

Hi biglad

i do plan to get a remap the same as yours soon, but with finding out that both the d 2 td5 and jag xjs 3.6 use the same auto box i just put 2+2 together and got 10, as i have just said to sierrafery i get confused with torque and bhp.

The Disco and the Jag may use the same box but the internals might be different to account for the extra power in the Jag. For example, Chrysler used the venerable A727 3 speed slushbox in everything from the 340 up to the 426 race hemi. Obviously the internals weren't the same between the two extremes!
