i did contact Luke, and his suggestion is to replace slave cylinder, using a bigger bore from a V8... will try that out
 
so, to my horror, after replacing the clutch and also the spigot bearing and many other components, I am hearing the spigot bearing noise again when cold, although not as loudly as before and gears are going in normally, even when cold. Mechanic said that some R380 gearboxes "do that" and there is no way of really fixing it apart from finding a gearbox which doesnt do it? Any thoughts about this?

hes wrong, if it was the g/box it would be a bearing race spinning in the case thats fixed by loctiting the race in to case, new spigot bushes can be very tight on input shaft and often need reaming once fitted to be a good fit

a taper bearing is in 2 parts ,the inner presses on to the shaft the outer in the case, these are a loose fit the outers that is, loctite stops them spinning
