depends on what model/age you have, earlier ones have to have a chip soldered, later ones remapped, but what a difference when done!
 
Can they not be re-mapped without being re-chipped? If so how could you tell?

It depends on which version of the engine ECU you've got. If the model number starts with MSB ******* then it's not 'flashable' so you need to change the chip within the ECU to a flashable one. Once this is done, the re-mapping can occur via the diagnostic socket.

If the ECU model no. starts with NNN then it already has a flashable chipset and can therefore be remapped immediately via the OBD diagnostic socket.
