Well, you must love driving around in a vehicle that throws up electrical issues at the drop of a hat.

Plus the fact is that the only advantages of them are a few more bhp, (not much) and a few more cubic feet in the boot.

If the SAS or whoever wanted more power there was a lot more they could have done to tune a 300tdi to get it, which would have been traditional and reliable mechanics rather than p!ssing around with "mapping".
 
I bought a discovery TD5 recently, and I prefer the way our 300tdi, which was sold 5 years ago, drives on a longer trip. To me, with the TD5 having 5 combustion events every two RPM, vs the 4 combustion events per every 2 rpm on the 300tdi, it sounds like the TD5 is a 300tdi that's screaming it's nuts off.
Well as you can tell I am not a fan of the TD5 but having towed up to 3.5 tonnes down from Caen to nearly Carcassonne lots of times, towed with both types of vehicle, and back with the trailer empty, I can't honestly say I have felt like that about the TD5.
Then my 300tdi is manual but the TD5 is auto.

I've had 6 TD5s 4 x 110s and 2 x D2 and not one of them has thrown up any "electrical issues at the drop of a hat" , in fact the only problems other than service items I've had is 1 X delaminated crank pulley, 1 X screw in core plug behind the exhaust manifold leaking , snapped exhaust manifold studs and 2 injector wiring looms since my first in 2002. I find them superbly reliable.

I am a D2 owner and I have loved it from the day I bought it 15years ago. I wouldn’t drive to Japan in it. If it had a 200/300tdi and less electronic tat, I would drive it to the end of the earth.
 
I will drive any of our well maintained (known) LR products anywhere. Stuff will happen ;).
How easy is it fixable in the back and beyond is a different equation in the pot:).

The ole green van never broke down (I was young so never really knew)
this 1s not green though and nothing like my Dads and uncles

Never drive a 6 then.
My daily is a straight 6 3.0 twin-turbo diesel BMW (635d), and my wife's daily is a 3.0 v6 twin-turbo diesel Citroen C5, but both of those vehicles are significantly taller geared, and generally less agricultural than the TD5.

Both the discos I mentioned are/were manuals, so both were r380 gearboxes mated to 1.2 ratio LT230 transfer boxes, so the same road speeds result in very similar engine speeds*, and the TD5 sounds "busier" than the 300tdi.

*There are slight differences in the tyre sizes, and transfer box ratios, 235/70/16 ~28.95" O.D. vs 255/55/18 ~29.05" O.D. & 1.222:1 vs 1.211:1 - but they are really within spitting distance of each other.
