Just thinking out loud here but what would it entail to register a full chassis rebuild Defender as a new vehicle or is it possible at all?

Just that I need a chassis and logbook for a rebuild but don't want to get a really old one so looking into starting from complete scratch.

Also would probably be going with a TDV8 so not sure how that would complicate thins in an SVA test?
 
Possible yes u will need to buy everything new with receipts to prove it and unless things have changed you can have one major component remanufactured and then pass an sva , test not worth doing buy a banger and go down the rebuild route regards
 
No not really Q is for undetermined age or origin , new parts with vat num receipts shows age and origin thus giving vehicle year verification upon 251692 512321
 
well, the deal is... we can't register a new car over here in Ireland regardless so whatever date it says on the VLC that's tied to the chassis as first registered, that's the year the vehicle will be stated as first registered on the new Irish reg plate.

I'm guessing even with a Q-plate that was issued 1st, January 2015 for example would get a 15 plate over here when "imported" due to the first registeration date on the vehicle being in 2015?


Also... define "everything new" :)
Would that be every panel, chassis, engine, running gear, nut and bolt or would a used engine, gearbox, interior, axles etc be ok and just chassis, every body panel, all the suspension components, wheels be enough?

Absolutely everything must be new and backed up by vat numbered receipts with the exception of one reconditioned unit. Regards GATSO
 
Basic rule of thumb, a registration plate can not make a vehicle look younger then it actually is.

Dunno how taxation works over with you but a newly registered defender can be more expensive to tax here such as station wagon variants
 
yea, our tax system can be very expensive for a private vehicle. i.e, one that has more than 3 seats. upto 2000 euro per year. My E46 M3 is 1820 euro a year :(

For commercials though, it's 330 a year and this applies to crew-cabs too


Hi do a bangger up and put a private plate on.like LR 1, be cheaper then buying all new parts.

Why would I want to build a ****box???
We don't have private plates either

+ 1 😴😴 that's like saying all those inc me rebuilding a Land Rover only end up with a **** box like saccy said build and hide year if pos if not build and be proud u have a nice lanny on an old plate !!!
 
I would have thought mostly posing as any landy nut looking to buy will know what they're looking for
 
Because a decent crew-cab chassis with logbook are making around 700 euro anyway and that still needs to be galvanized and possibly repaired in some parts too.
A brand new chassis might not work out much dearer in the long run and just get it registered.

It won't be ever for sale so not really interested in resale value other than it's nice to know you have something worth value I suppose.
The younger the vehicle, the easier it is to insure too. You can't get fully comp on cars over 10 years old now with most insurers.

It'll be more or less a brand new Defender with a modern engine that's relatively unique so why wouldn't you like having it as a 15 plate if it was possible?


It'll be far from posing anyway as it'll get worked as hard as it ever did before and upto it's axles in mud at every chance it gets :)

i thought you'd need to use all new parts.. except the engine + gearbox *i think*

sorry, i don't see the point. even if you could get it reged.. it would have cost a bomb and wouldn't it be classified as some type of kit car? I have no idea, but I doubt you could say it was built by landrover.
