Hi all,
I'm in the process of refitting a refurbished galv bulkhead to my series 3, I started today and found that basically not much fits. I expected a little bit of warping due to the galv process but the main bulkhead bottom bolt holes were a good inch out, so had to carefully stretch it using a winch, also the holes for the footwell floors that the spire nut clip into were too far in so I had to grind out chunks to allow these to fit, some holes aren't even drilled and others haven't been cleaned of galv in the threads. Having a quick look around I'm pretty sure a few other things are going to cause trouble too. I haven't yet complained to the company who sold me this as I thought I'd check to see if this was the kind of standard experienced by others and if you just take the issues on the chin. I just personally expected a bit more attention to detail after spending the best part of £1100 and being assured beforehand that it will be rejigged and cleaned up post galving. I don't generally do complaining. Thanks in advance for any input. John

sounds like they have not done the rejigging and cleaned up holes, also it seems that someone has galvanised it then has just put it to one side and never did anything else, i would contact them and say that its warped and some stuff wont line up, and they may put it on the jigg to straighten it out, i dont think they will change it over as you have done a little grinding on it, but im sure they should fix the warp in it at least.

Tony.

Distortion is common and a jack or winch seems to be an essential aid to "fitting".
Untapped holes are a fault (assuming they said they're meant to be cleaned). Missing holes are tricky because many are added over the years, personally I'd rather drill than have an excess.

Rebuilt my bulkhead and had it galvanised other than recutting threads and clearing holes out I could find no distortion foot mounting holes just needed a slight pull to line up and that was probably due to the zinc reducing size of holes.
Let them sort it out.

I recently refitted my glav bulkhead and had no problems whatsoever. Every thing had been cleaned up all threads re-tapped and holes re-drilled. It lined up perfectly with the chassis first time. There had been warping on a couple of the flat panels but all the important things worked and lined up. I also didn't pay any where near as much as you have so I would definitely complain and get them to sort it out.

I got it from here. But ignore the prices on the website, it has not been updated for years and they no longer have them on the shelf so can only repair yours. I paid £800 for mine to be repaired and galvanised. They are a very small outfit working out of a garage/shed in Birmingham, but I cant fault the job they did. the only "problem" was that it took about 9 months due to the number of others in the queue before mine.

I was wondering if that was the same people I bought mine from, I won mine on ebay a few months back and picked it up from Walsall. Mine came with bulkhead supports, pedals all fitted all plastic clips fitted and a servo (which is a nice upgrade I was going to do). The foot wells are the correct ribbed ones too and it was seal sealed. All I need now is a galvo chassis to stick it on! Oh and if it was steel it had been galvanised apart from the servo.

£1105 on ebay, I forgot it came with the linkages, hand throttle and heater as well.

Very smart, and a good price as well, I gather they are going for more than that without the extras.

The prices seem to be creeping up now as they get scarce, so when I saw this I though I'll have that, plus I still have my old one to sell on.

I got a new galv chassis from Richards and refitted the old bulkhead. It took a LOT of persuading to line up the mounting holes...

I got a galv chassis from Richards and the old bulkhead went back on quite easily....

I guess it depends the mood of the welder at both the Rover factory and Richards factory on the particular day.

Thanks, unfortunately my bulkhead was in such a bad condition that they wouldn't entertain repairing it so had to purchase a refurbed one that they had sourced themselves. Hence the extra cost I guess, I looked on here but as they couldn't supply a bulkhead for refurb it wasn't an option

I got mine from a place in Yorks, I wouldn't like to name them at the moment as I don't want to affect the outcome if I do complain, hope you understand

Thanks for all your replies guys, I haven't got round to tackling any more of it yet, but I'm thinking that I'll probably crack on with it, I'm not taking it back out to send it away to them now, fingers crossed with a bit of tapping but hopefully no more grinding I'll get it all sorted. I might add a word of caution when buying a bulkhead, don't forget VAT, a £900 bill jumps up to £1080 (which I accepted) and make sure they include postage rather than chucking an extra £65 on at the end, which I did fall foul of but after waiting months and paying a hefty deposit I took on the chin. Once bitten, twice shy, I think a trip to the workshop is a good idea if you can.
