2006 petrol freelander 1.8. two years back i was happily heading along a motorway and the engine temp gauge suddenly shot to the right, red light came on and fans went onto ballistic mode (not a gradual shift but a sudden switch to red area). I stopped, turned the engine off and 2 minutes later the gauge was back in middle. red light off. -fans ok and all fine.
I headed on for 10 minutes and same all happened again. stopped in a lay-by and ran engine to keep warm for 40 minutes. engine fine. fans trundling -no excess noise. I posted about this elsewhere 2 years ago -and it has happened again.
called out AA and got taken home.
mechanic said water pump or electrics. (top hose warm -not hot. lower one cooler? water pump?)
any ideas?
oil clean. engine cool. no loss of coolant (head gasket replaced 2011)

Hi Pete (seems like a reasonable introduction to me!!...what is this??..the Masons???)..what is it with you people?. We noobs maybe pond life in the minds of the pretentious "star chamber" of google meisters we seem to have on here. I, personally have never ever seen such an unwelcoming forum.

Right, rant over. Back to this fellow land rover owners problem.... (WTF??!)

Ok Pete, there are 2 coolant sensors at the front right of the motor, seek them out. There may be wiring problems there. I think one is for the temp gauge, and the other is for the ECU. Any problems with the ECU one, and it runs to mummy and sets the fans off (disconnect it and see).

Dont personally think its a biggy, as no coolant loss/ pressurisation.

Worth a look anyway, and worth changing them out just to be sure. They don't cost much. Hope that maybe of some help.

Nobody was rude or unwelcoming and a request to post in the Intro section as is polite on forums everywhere is not only normal but likely to save them from grief from members that feel more strongly about it.

It was a request that was given along with a whole list of helpful threads.

LZ is what it is, it may be a little gruff at times but generally that walks hand in hand with a good sense of humour. It's also probably the most active LR forum on the net so you'll get help or advice without having to stare at a static screen for days.

Of course with so many active users you might not like every post. So what? Deal with it or move to one of the other forums that are so tightly moderated that everyone is afraid to post except a bloke that can recite the Haynes book of lies.....and we all know how misleading that can be

Pull on your rhino skin coat, crank up your sense of humour and enjoy the ride :)

I am sorry, this just doesn't fly for me. Anyone who does not regard Pete's initial response to his problem as rude or unwelcoming should, without doubt, obtain employment with the Islamic State human rights helpline.

I refer the honourable gentlemen to the comments i made earlier.

Goodnight.

well I've reread the thread and tbh I'm struggling to see what anyone is upset about.

It seems some are looking for an excuse to be offended and are more than happy to up the ante

I'm not sure why you'd want to be part of such a blatantly unwelcoming crowd that would have the audacity to search and post links to the OPs problem for them but flounce away....that'll teach them :)

Any idea if the IS pension plan is any good? :D:p

In other forums it's laughingly referred to as "offence by proxy", normally associated with older women ! :D

Hi I'm pleased to say your right to be offended has been noted and you have the right to hit the report button and indicate your outrage.

However please make your report humerous as I could do with a good laugh.;)

That and as your so knowledgeable about IS, I take it we should report you as a Jihadist lol

many thanks longbolt. i was pretty sure the coolant /oil/ temp are ok and issue is electrical. apologies to those who wanted a formal introduction. Had 1.8 petrol freelander since 2006 and it has cost a lot of money with a head gasket after 80k km.

i had use another forum and posted pics, joined in discussions and etc. i got help on tyres and other issues but there were always the hard nuts who simply said 'sell it' and seemed too tough to care...

i never did get a sane response to that query. -way it goes -but thanks to you for a polite answer

Longbolt, thanks very much for the info. armed with it i was able to avoid a LR garage and head to a mechanic. he immediately suggested the temp sensor (he said if changing that didn't fix it it was a wiring issue that required further testing). the part cost 15 euro. he did it as part of a yearly service. i've since done 2000km so fingers crossed he got it -the freelander is still holding all coolant (3 years since it was topped up) and burns very little oil (touch wood). thanks for the steer it was very helpful
