As long as belt is ok, with no squealing etc, if you have a voltmeter, put it accross the battery terminals with the engine running. Should show around 14.5 volts. If not, your alternator is probably faulty.

How are your lights working?

have you checked output from alt ??

belt could be ok but altenator could be u/s ??
should be putting out about 14.2 v @ tickover ? or there abouts with no load on it ?

(about 13.5V with headlights on dipped )

what is output ?

hope that helps ??

Guys, many thanks, have been going through the posts and rev counter is all over the place as well, Next question, any recommendations as to where to buy a new alt and how much am I likely to pay? SERIOUS answers please.

PS Like the avatars, made me laugh,

Bob

how do you know it's the alt yet ?

any landy place will sell you a new one, probably anywhere from £80 to £300

Ok guys, thanks for the info, been on a few Disco sites, and this is easily the best...will stick here methinks

Check with a voltmeter first, and just check the wires on the back of the alternator. The inside one that feeds the rev counter often comes loose and has a bad connection.

A new one will be anywhere from £95-150. A genuine LR one is £400+ from a main dealer, so dont even go there. Cheapest is not always best. I got a brand new cheapo and it was faulty straight out of the box. Go to an independent LR parts place, a decent motor factors or Paddocks/Craddocks etc online. There are 2 types as well......65 amp and 100amp. You will probably need the 100 amp

Ditto coppetash I brought cheap and it cost me time and money.

30 min job to fit but kept draining the battery when not running, then the sent me a new one and the shaft wouldn't even turn by hand grrr

( Britpart) now have a bearmach runs a treat :)
