Happened to me a few weeks back. I blamed it first on the battery (which was bad but not that bad), then on a poor earth strap, and finally on a bum alternator. It was actually a combination but when the alternator died it drew all the power from the battery. The new battery and alternator made for healthy engine starts and no more charging light!
Did the basic checks tonight when I got home. As I suspected nothing untoward with belt tension n connections. Pulled the previous alternator off the home spares/ junk store. It's a Lucas model bog standard across most BL cars of the 60/70's. The rectifier can be bought n replaced but it's all soldered connections. As a well known member of the forum says occasionally "**** that ****e". Ordering a new alternator, which ****es me off after doing all sorts of ignition system and lightning upgrades. And before anyone says that's not the reason for the failure it's coincidence.

Every now and again my red ignition light comes on too, it stays on foe two or three miles and then goes off. I have bought a replacement alternator but not yet fitted it. This is a god reminder for me to get on with it before the old one fails completely.

Speshully with the cold weather coming, the extra load might cause it to fail ... check all connections while your there too ...
