there is a rebodied Disco I/II with an auto and 300tdi and a 90 van top on near me, I think it is correctly still registered as a disco.

Just wanted to garner peoples thoughts as to whether I'd be better off waiting for an 'original' (with a b*****dised gearbox transplant)
 
A 90 has a 92.9” wheelbase vs 100” for a Disco?

Is it still 100”? If so. Then if cheap enough might be ok to look at.

If it is 92.9” then has the chassis been chopped or is it actually a 90 chassis? Either way, if registered as a Disco. It will be illegal to use on the road.
 
I thought that if the chassis hasn't been cut then it still was legal as a rebody.

I know you cant shorten a chassis any more

You can’t fit a chassis that is shorter either. As it is essentially the same end result as chopping one down.

If you do this it would require an IVA and if it passes would end up on a Q plate.

How would i tell? how would anyone tell short of disassembling it?
the guy selling it had it done 14 years ago and says he was open and honest with DVLA who said to leave it as a discovery

As said. Depends what has been done. If it is just a body swap with a 100” wheelbase. Then it should be fine. Although not worth the same as a 90.

This will be easy to tell. Because the body won’t look 100% the same as a 90’s. Because the rear wheels will be in a different place. Lots of ways to doing this. Most common is to bobtail a 90 rear tray or cut a 110 rear tray down to fit the 100” wheelbase.

Measuring the wheelbase is also very very easy.

If the wheelbase is not 100” then it more than likely is not road legal unless it has been IVA’d and on a Q plate.

Again measuring the wheelbase is easy. If the chassis has been chopped this will be easy to spot too. And if it is using a Defender chassis, these look different to Disco ones.
 
There's a Discovery near me that is tax exempt because its a disco body on an early rangy chassis, all legal. Cops keep stopping him because ANPR tell them it is a rangy and they see a disco. No problem though, he keeps copy's of the paperwork handy.
If you are realy interested in the vehicle have someone who knows defenders/discos very well look it over.

It might not be a can of worms. Plenty of well done modified vehicles about. But the op needs to provide more info.

Land Rover did actually build some 100" 'Defenders' and it is relatively easy to do and remain completely legal. But it really depends on what exactly the vehicle is and what has been done to it.

Post some photos an we might be able to tell what it is (or isn't)
