hi chaps ive recently bought a 1990 rrc
rear wiper motor wasnt working so i had a look and it was unplugged ?
so plugged in and it justs make's a grinding noise no movement !
ive recently bought 2 secondhand units from reputable people
1 of the units got no life at all
the other unit just makes the same grinding noise as the 1 that was on
there is no problem with getting power but makes the noise as soon as ign is on not when the switch on steering coloumn is touched
any ideas or any other things 4 me to check
thanks

your best bet it to realise like most other classic owners that the rear wipers are as reliable as your local plumber and leave it there for asthetic purposes only :D
seriously tho sounds odd that it's making a noise when not switched on:confused: mine makes a nasty noise and does not turn properly as the drive to the spindle has given up:mad: if it'd makin a noise with no switched supply to it it sounds like apart from anything else that you've got some wiring gremlins:confused:

hi rustyrangie thanks for reply and advice mate
i just dont like 2 beaten so i will keep on investigating ! do you know if i can split the motors ? i may be able 2 at least make 1 good un out of 3 ?
thanks

All of the ones I've worked on (and it's a few), the drive shaft (which is the bit the wiper arm fits on) always siezes into the carrier (which is the bit of casting that sticks out through the body).

It's an easy fix if your motor is an early one as the steel back plate unbolts, then you can drop the internals out, drive/press out the drive shaft (they tend to sieze in really solid), and get it all working again. If yours is a later one, to save 10p, Landrover replaced all the bolts with rivits. You'll need to drill the rivits out, drill the holes right through the casting and replace the rivits with nuts and bolts. Then once the cover is off, you do the same as you would with an earlier one.

I always stuff copper-slip on the shafts when I rebuild them and make sure that the owner knows to turn the wiper on every month or so just to help prevent it siezing again.
