I got one of the official Freelander-1 Rear Window Guard kit to help my old hound this summer.

The instructions have use of little paper template that came in the kit, this template is used to punch the drilling points for the holding brackets so is quite critical to do it right.

Step 3 shows a Masking-Tape strip used to mark the horizontal in (this is not the template)

Step 4 - this is what confuses me. Is the top-right part this template just meant to go as far under the lifted-up rubber seal as it will go? If so I don't understand the step cut into the top-left part of the template. If I lay the template OVER the rubber seal to align with the top of it, the step matches perfectly with the bottom edge of the rubber seal (making me suspect that is how it's meant to be used?)

Don't want to drill metal until I know for sure.

Can anyone confirm how this template really is meant to be applied?

Hello I can't remember how I did it when I did mine - think I lined it up with the seal and then did a dummy run after marking it out before drilling to check the alignment

It wasn't clear that's for sure!

It goes under the seal until it hits the lip of the metal (back edge of the seal as it comes out of the door cavity

I don't think you'll be able to have the window open while you're driving - exhaust fumes get sucked in on my L Series.

Thanks for the helps guys.

The Freelander manual says don't drive with the window down as exhaust gets in. So I won't, it's for keeping the motor cooler when parked.

Cheers

If you drive with the rear windscreen down and all the side windows and the sunroof open then you're pretty much OK in my experience but with just the rear screen down it's a properly nasty way to travel and may even be extremely dangerous!

in the hot summer (who am I kidding in England and Ireland) I have the sunroof open and open the back window as well it saves having the air con on and I think it is nicer as air con gives me a bad throat.
