I need to load a 1/2 ton item, on wheels, onto a trailer without a winch fitted. I have a drop down tow bar (see below) and this has a solid bar, what could be used by a stump puller - however these seem to have a short length and I need at least 5m if not longer. I have emailed a few companies to see if I could find a bracket that would attach to the drop down allow me to fit a manual winch, but no joy. Maybe I need to get something fabricated, but that seems expensive. I don't want to use a towbar mount, as I would like to use that to keep the trailer steady during loading.

Any words of wisdom or advice?

Many thanks,

James

It has two hooks and a ratchet system. Occasionally use one when I can't get close enough with my Disco.

Plenty good enough for your situation, I think.

Why would it have three hooks?

One of the hooks is on a pulley block, so you can double the cable pull. You might need a shackle hooked round the top bar of the tow hitch- don't just loop the cable round onto itself.

Looks like a good enough solution- the trailer stays coupled up in a straight line to stop it moving around, then use the ratchet winch to pull the load onto it. Rather than chock the load when you reposition the winch cable, a ratchet strap between it and the landy/trailer would be more secure

A 1/2 Ton rolling load will be easy
I would put a large 10.8 grade bolt through one of the spare holes on the adjustable hitch or a shackle and use a hand winch

If you really, really, absolutely really want a winch on the back end, google "winch in a box".

Looks good but I do wonder about the potential loadings and the direction of the loadings on the tow ball?
I will have to go away and think about this.
I prefer to use this sort of attachement as its ok with side loads

But I do wonder what weight a ISO 50mm tow ball is rated for?
