I have searched for the info with no luck.

I have managed to get my hands (legally!) on a auto dipping mirror and would like to fit it. I have removed the interior light and had a squint in the roof lining but cannot see the required electric connection. I notice on the donor vehicle that the electrics are bound in the same harness branch as the interior light feed.

Before I go ahead and remove the front interior trim - and possibly pull down that section of the roof lining I thought I would ask here.

So:-

1. Will the power feed for the auto mirror be tucked up inside the roof lining? Or will I needto rig one - off the interior light perhaps?

2. How do I remove the existing mirror and fit the new one? It looks like a clip that is designed to let go if hit hard - so do I just hit it hard?

BTW Discovery 2 VS face lift of 2002 vintage.

There's definitely spare wires up in the headlining. When I fixed my leaking sunroof i had the liner down. I'd assumed they were for the electric sunroof and compass mirror etc (neither fitted to my Disco). If you check it might even have the right plug on the end for your mirror
Hold off on rigging any feeds, I'm sure someone will give you a bit more detailed info.
 
Fitted such a mirror to my 2004 TD5 a couple of months ago. The wiring and plug was already in place, just took a bit of fishing around to find it, it can be quite far back under the headlining! The existing mirror can be removed from the screen by pulling downwards HARD!! on the arm. The new one can then be pushed up over the metal fastener attached to the screen.

I got my mirror from a mate who is breaking a V8 to build a serious off roader. I have seen them advertised on Ebay - there's one there now (land rover discovery 2 compass mirror auto dim dip on eBay (end time 08-Feb-10 16:09:21 GMT)) currently at £22 - but its got 4 days left to run.

I suspect the final selling price for this will go up quite a bit higher - mine cost upwards of £70 from an e-bay seller. They are quite a popular mod for later D2's and the auto dim function works extremely well, the compass display is (in my opinion) a bit of a gimmick tho',

Hmmmm.................., I sort of see where your coming from, but my experience of the mirror compass is that it only changes the heading indication in 15 to 20 degree blocks. That's ok for a short distance and a rough indication of your heading when off road.

I reckon I would certainly rely more on an accurate heading from a sat-nav or dedicated gps for longer distance navigation (although I normally have more fun when I get totally lost....) :)

Just thought I would close this one off.

Went back for a good poke around and couldn't find the required plug to fit the auto mirror. Resorted to taking down the trim and lowering the headlining slightly for a better poke (!). Still couldn't find it.

Had another look at the wires and I discovered that the colour coding on one spare plug was identical to that on the mirror - but the plug is different. See photographs t he pair are the set on the mirror, the single one is the one that was on my Disco(2002, face lift). Decided that must be it and cut off the plug and replaced it with the one to fit the mirror.

Put it all back together and......

the car wouldn't start and radio wouldn't work! Doh :doh:

After some head scrathing decided it was a fuse. Checked every fuse in the car and found two bust. Replaced them - everything OK and the headlamp washers are now working (which the they didn't before)! Result :)

I think I accidently let the earth of the courtesy light touch the live and blew one of the fuses. The other must have been blown for yonks.

Just goes to show - if working on electrics - disconnect the battery or take more care.

Bottom line is that the mirror you have is not designed for the Disco. Both mirrors I have fit the single black plug from the rooflining in your first pic....

I do actually have a spare auto dim mirror to fit a Disco but it only has one side cover for the mounting spigot. make me an offer and it's most probably yours....:cool:

You surprise me.

The mirror was taken from a Disco (V8 circa 1998)

The plug was taken from the same Disco - and it was wired into the harness - definitely an original part.

Mounting is identical to that taken off and auto mirror clipped into place easily.

Looks the part.
