With the result of my last project being a resounding success it's time to up the ante: in that one I was largely in the shadow of someone else's prior work - this time it ought to be something from scratch, something new, something I'm not sure has been covered.

Before I give up the game there's two questions to get the noggin joggin;

  1. Is it easy (possible) to remove the rear view mirror
  2. Can said mirror be substituted, were there any freelander rear view variations?
Unlikely to get this out before the year is done but better to ask the question
 
The rear view mirror appears to be bonded to the glass; is there a way to get it off?
 
Lifts off!! Metal clip bonded to glass. Plastic mirror arm slides on fron top with a slot in it!!
I fitted a rear view camera to mine and a trailer cam so that I can see what is following the horse trailer in the rear view mirror.
 
I vaguely remembered making a thread, giggling to myself in a pub while on holiday. Then the search tool came back and now I can see it was real and very much not a dream... well, I finally bought the intended transplant. Here we are!

It appears to demand three pins in a standard LR plug, 12V, earth and something that tells it to power on in position 2. Cursory glance at the standard freelander rear view indicates it ought to fit

Correction: Appears the D2 and Freelander mounts are wildly different, so I'm going to need some kind of conversion block

AH! Digital compas - nice :) You might be as well buying a discovery 2 mounting block and gluing it to the screen in place of the standard block...?
 
Turns out the Discovery 2 clip is also bonded straight to the glass, and does not have a part number associated to it. Instead it's considered part of CTB000010 and is sometimes retailed as part of that package, but ebay wasn't so kind. A quick dive into the scrapyard and one destroyed Disco windshield later and I now have that metal clip. With the Freelander rear view mirror removed there does appear to be enough room to have both mounts present, but I'm not going to try putting the new clip on the formed windscreen, instead I'll use an adhesive pad and add it on top of that. With the discovery rear view unclipping down and the Freelander sliding up, there ought to be no conflict there.

Next steps:
  • Crush the remainder of the glass off the clip
  • Obtain pad
  • Find wiring and plug
  • Install wiring and plug into some electrical points.. somewhere
  • Bung it all together at the end
 
Just a thought for you in physically mounting it, when I did the MGF + LEDs mirror upgrade in my freelander I noticed that the hippo mirror and the MGF one were identical body shapes, just the MGS had the cutouts for the lights, and I was able to spring the bezel off to remove the glass to look at how the bulb holders were wired... So... I wonder if you could save yourself a bit of ballache by swapping themounting arm from a freelander mirror into the discovery body, or use the freelander body to house the discovery mirror gubbins?

This was an idea I did have initially when the candidate mirror arrived, unfortunately they don't share a body, and the Discovery mirror's arm and ball joint are very different to accommodate the plug for the compass and display

Our plug has three pins attached to three wires; Black, Light-green/white and green/brown.

Black - neutral
Light-green/white - Ignition switch live
Green/brown - Reverse lights
