I use my 90 on some rough tracks. I’ve got fairly new suspension and don’t believe any arms/bushes are causing it. When I drop in a rut/hole I often get a banging and I’ve got a feeling it’s the spare wheel juggling about as it jiggles a bit when you slam the door. I wanted an ORE spare wheel carrier but out of budget so was looking at a Mantec one. I know the green lane and off-roaders will know - is the spare wheel noisy over rough ground? Cheers

Strikes me you need to do something about that before you write off the door.
And no, I have a Mantec carrier and the wheel is firm, no banging.

If the structure in the door is giving way things start to rattle, take a look a few welds will sort it. Worn hinges and striker plate out of position/loose can cause problems.

My spare did that once upon a time and it was because the wheel nuts bottomed out on the carrier studs
I introduced spacers, big washers between the wheel and the carrier and it solved the issue.

Thanks and yes agreed it must be stressing the door if it is that making that noise. I guess the way to be sure is remove it before I go down the tracks. I think I’ll purchase the carrier end of month. I don’t think it’s enough travel for it to be bump stops

Do you have alloy wheels or steel wheels?

As mentioned above, you need spacers on the door mounted carrier to fit an alloy wheel, they are
basically thin nuts that you screw on to the bolts before you fit the wheel.

lf you don't have the spacers, the wheel won't seat properly on the door mounted carrier bracket (although it may look OK) and will rattle/bang as you go over rough ground.

lf you have a rear window, and the wiper arm is touching the tyre, you are missing the spacers.

Thanks guys. @lightning not quite touching but it has never felt ‘right’. It’s torqued up but it’s like it had play and I can’t see any play where the mount attaches to the door. Yes alloy wheels. The only other thing that bangs is the jump seat feet but I can just bungee them up

Thanks all. Looks like that’s the culprit doesn’t it. I’ll take off when I get a sec to double check they aren’t there before ordering. This is why it’s always worth asking with defenders - someone will notice something and say “oh mine doesn’t have one of those” or “you’re missing x”

Similar but not quite the same: I've just swapped my rear door carrier for a terra firma swing away carrier. On the studs that hold the wheel the last 10-15mm at the door end are plastic coated. So the wheel nuts will not tighten up far enough to hold wheel tight. Tried by fitting an extra set of notes behind the wheel - but again can't get those flush to wider piece of the studs. Any ideas?
