It never rains but it pours as they say.
Got to my Disco this morning to discover a large pool of brake flud underneath the rear RHS. A quick look underneath showed the problem.
The shock mount has torn off the side of the chassis taking part of the outer chassis with it!
I've no idea when or how this happended (I don't off-road) as it was fine this weekend but do need some advice on if this is going to be able to be fixed.
The break looks clean with no corrosion but some idea of prices etc. when it comes to welding\repair would be much apprecited.
That and new brake lines :(
 
The only way I can imagine this happening is a complete seizure of the rear shocker, although without corrosion it still seems fairly unlikely, repair would probably consist of, new shock mount, shock absorber, bolts, Suitable nuts to be welded to rear of 3mm plate, some 3mm plate, a length of copper brake line and about 4 hours labour, so probably looking at £350, an alternative would be to cut a piece from a scrap D2 chassis and weld onto yours. This is without looking, may well be cheaper/more expensive.

I've had someone come out to look at it and it is corrosion. It's up on ramps in the garage tomorrow to see what can be done :(
I just hope that the affected area can be sorted out.

As requested, a pic. The garage are taking it in this morning to see what can be done.
I can afford repairs, but not a chassis replacement (I'd have to save a few months for that!)

Guys, if you could give me some advice about the level of poo that may induce please let me know.
As a point of referance, you can see the height sensor on the RHS of the pic.
The garage can't pick it up today and I'm in two minds wether to phone an automotive welding specialist instead.
Any recommendations for the Preston area?
 
Where are you mate, I know a very good welder with very reasonable rates local to here In somerset/dorset.

I would definitely say that you would be better in the hands of a welding specialist, a lot of garages welding is pretty suspect and to 'MOT' standards only, (i.e. A 1.2mm plate over a hole in the chassis in a structural location), you will normally be charged a lot more from a bog standard garage as well.

Welding wise, what you see is the tip of the iceberg in my opinion, so don't be surprised if it needs a lot more then you expected :(

I'm in Preston, Lancs. Bit of a distance frm you ;)
I paid 4k for the Disco and a new chassis +fitting comes in at that! As it's my first Land Rover and teh wife +kids have loved it to pieces (not to mention myself I am a bit gutted. I had gove it a good look over but it had years of undercoat\wayoyl over it it was impossible to see even with screwdriver prodding when I inspected it. I'm estimating possibly a £650 bill inc brake line fix, but it's not going to be a small job. May save for a Chassis now. It'd be a shame to get rid of such a nice vehicle. The bodywork + interior is spotless and it was the top of the line XS with rear air-con too. I can't let that go!
 
Well, the good news is that it's fixable :)
All I need to do is order a new rear shock bracket and the garage will get it in next week.
Now I'm having some problems actually finding one that plainly says 'Discovery 2 rear shock bracket' online.
If someone can please provide a link to one I'd like to order tonight.

Could try richards chassis got my rear spring mount from them.

I'm just surprised I can't find one to buy for a Disco II. Plenty available for the Disco I though.
As for making one, forget it. I'm a fitter not an artificer!

Thnaks for the recommendation. They were the only people who had one on the self (fabricated by them) and at £30 inc. delivery didn't leave a bad taste in my wallet :)
The actual fitting however was something else. I had to find a sepcialst welder who removed the rear seats and carpet, and welded a hole in the floor to get to the working area.
£400 all in including coating the chassis. The rest of the chassis is not a worry according to them :)
