I replaced my rubber coupling 2 months ago and I have just been under it again for an unrelated job and have found the new coupling has cracked already! can anyone shed some light on the matter because I dont want to waste more money on a new coupling if its gonna eat another one... Am I better going to a 200 tdi prop and flange? I can get a prop for 25 quid from ebay but I need the flange

Did you assemble it originally the right way round?

The moulded pads on the coupling MUST be in compression when driving and in tension when on the overrun.

The next turn round on the bolts uses the moulding in between the pads to transmit the drive, which is a lot less strong.

We've had a replacement on now for 12000+ miles on a V8 D2 with no problems, just been to Holland and back towing 2.5 tons of trailer and engine, plus three adults and a load of camping gear.

thanks for your replies, first off the part I bought was from 'all makes 4x4' and so was not the genuine article, also I haven't altered the suspension since i have had it but it has the spring air bag helpers fitted inside the rear springs but I don't know if the springs have been changed... Thanks for the instruction page I will check tomorrow if I have fitted the current one correctly. one thing I do remember is that the angle of the propshaft when it meets the rear diff is differen to the angle that the diff is sitting? is this ok or not? Personally I think something isnt right with this but I may be wrong

I have had a good look at the coupling and it appears that i have fitted it the correct way and so its down to either a crap coupling or the vehicle setup is incorrect.. either way I have managed to source a 200tdi rear prop for £25 and all I need now is the coupling for the diff and its spacer.. Any ideas where I can get one for reasonable money??

you can replace the current rear diff (3 bolt flange) with a 300tdi front diff (4 bolt flange) so that the 200tdi prop shaft can be fitted.

i brought a 4 bolt flange and 200tdi prop and didnt need a spacer, i changed mine as i got a 2" lift and have killed a couple of donuts. btw a flange from a 10 spline diff will not fit a 24 spline diff

i got my flange from jsf 4x4

I have used them before and were quite expensive... but I'm just gonna have to bite the bullet and pay it because I'm running out of options

try valley then but they are farther away so it's swings and roundabouts. at least if ya buy local and it's wrong you don'y have to go through e bay and paypal to try and get your cash back. always worth payin a bit more just to deal with breakers face to face:D

i see we are getting back to bad old ways.
When you list a query please say type and year of vehicle.
Big help to everyone. Also fitted new genuine LR doughnut(cost £30.) in Oct 2007,done 21000 miles and checked last month and all OK.

sorry janderson41.. Its a 1997 discovery 300tdi
I will try valley and see what the come back with price wise

how do yu remove the diff flange? cant see any obvious way - no nut in middle.
Does it have to be a 300TDi front flange to replace the rear one with, cos it says ^^^^^ yu cant use a 200TDi one :(?

and yes - i have :search:

There is a nut in the middle, you have to remove the locator thing in the middle, think there a m8 thread in the centre you can use

3 bolt flange needs slide hammer and 8mm threaded attachment to pull out spigot then you can undo nut/bot and remove flange ,front flanges are the same as rear ,choice of flange used depends on spline number on pinion older 4 spline later 24 ish or fine splined
