Well spotted that man
I only mark them if I'm refitting the same bearing housings. If I replacing the whole bearing assembly then there's little point in marking the position.
I'm going to test my VCU this week, I suspect it's due for replacement.

Well just taken the whole lot off and boy it certainly feels easier round hard corners.Just out of interest should i be able to move the vcu at all by hand

No not really. You need a long lever.
This is how a good VCU should perform. If you don't get similar results using this test, your VCU is to stiff.

And although i have a TD4 i seem to have a torsional damper on my vcu. Thought these were only on k 1.8 models

The mass damper is fitted to all 4 cylinder Freelanders. Only the V6 doesn't have one
