I've had a bit of a search here but can't find the answer. I've got a knock when changing gear from the back. Jacked the rear up and found there is play in the splines let the landy down and it dissapears.. no slack.. could this be the knocking or should I go for the half shafts ?

Thanks mate - its the spines in the propshaft i checked - also checked the A frame ball joint - that seemed to be ok

What vehicle? Do you have an LT77 or R380 main gearbox (is reverse next to 1st or below 5th?). Could be gearbox spline wear if it is a 77, would be surprised if spline wear on prop would give you a knock on gear change. Check U/Js, and rear drive members (if it isn't a 90). A frame ball joint can cause it but because of weight of axle you may not notice it unless you get some form of lever to check it.

Thanks for the replies. It's a 1994 300tdi with a r380 box. I checked the ujs and they are ok.. I did put a bar in to check movement .. did all seem ok. If I'm gentle on the gear change there's no knock..

Careful clutch and well placed gear changes you can almost remove all clunking in a Defender's drive-train without slipping the clutch. Mine is pretty much all new bits but still clunks a bit if I drive it a bit quick.
