Hello everyone...:scratching_chin:

i was wondering if you could advise me on the law of carrying rear passengers in my Defender TD5 90.

It has x1 rear bench seat at the moment, does this need to have a lap belt to carry passengers?

Some people are saying there legal without a lap belt but illegal with one which to me makes no sence...:doh::doh: but then again who am i to argue...

Just one addition:

- Seat belts are not required on side facing seats - strong indication that lap belts are more dangerous in a crash to no belts, and that mounting 3 point belts with strong enough mountings is a challenge!

- Legal issues re: carrying children in the rear - relates to legislation around using proper child seats. Conclusion: side facing child seats are a real challenge to secure with lap belts, so don't!
 
Thanks for responce, the little one stays in the front anyway but shes getting to big for the centre seat and it gets a little cramp...

Off on our jollies to deepest darkest wales in the summer and thinking of taking the defender but wasnt sure how the best way to fit me, her who must be obeyed and our little one in... sitting on a bench seat aint going to be much fun for the other half for aprox 3 hours...

Any ideas other than leaving the Mrs at home?? :clap2::clap2:
 
A fair point!

I have a SWB 90 with just the three front seats - 20 miles is about the maximum I can endure with my wife and 11 year lad in the front before I get bored with asking him to move his knees so I can change gears!

Beyond you in the back and the Missus driving, can't better your own suggestion:D

A bit of a pain perhaps, but I have known people fit a front facing bench seat (with 3 point belts) in the rear which they bolt in and out (only 4 bolts through the floor (with reinforcing plates)) - could be a pre holiday project?

Mmmm food for thought the local landy dealer said some thing along them lines, fitting a bench seat but facing the rear...
Suppose this will save loosing the load space...

Has anyone done this???

As for the Mrs driving!!! Not on this earth :eek:
 
I went 7 hours over the christmas break on the centre seat, baby seat to my left and wife driving. (she is pregnant so lap belt is a no no). Took the landy due to snow and I bit the bullet in the middle. No problem. Im 6 ft 1 and 95kgs!

Baby number two will mean a forward facing rear seat when exmoor trim release a locking one.
 
Think I've seen a couple of threads on that - worth a search

Think bolting them in was simple enough - it was securely fixing the 3 point belts that needed a little more thought.

Just one thing - if you're going to have them rear facing against the bulkhead behind the front seats, you need to do something to stop the passenger's head hitting yours in the event of sharp breaking or a front end crash.

Have a dog guard fitted, but i see what your saying the back of her head on to the back of mine woudnt be pleasent... :fish:

Might just treat her to a nice comfy new bench seat as the one we have is looking a little tired... :tea:

I've got a pair of forward-facing fold-up seats in the back on my Ninety, along with inertia seat-belts. I keep meaning to take some pics of them. We've got two kids so it turns the Ninety into a semi-practical family vehicle (okay, so getting the kids into the back means throwing them over the bulkhead, but they don't seem to mind :))

Thinking some disco rear seats might go in ok, are they called dickies?? plus they fold up to save the load space....

Landrovers you've got to love em... there is always the next project...

How true....

and being really boring, more seats really is a tell your insurer job (theoretically increases their liability if more people could be in the landy), and strictly speaking a V5 DVLA change as well. :(
 
i ffitted a single inward facing seat with lap belt in the rear of my 90, It is comfortable for the mrs but she doesnt like turning her head to look out the windo as mine is a hardtop. As for the rear facing bench seat you can not fit a child booster seat as these need to be fitted to a Forward facing seat with a 3 point belt, Unless there over 12 or a certain height, I put my 8 year old in the front with hos booster the centre seat was never an option for us as i am only 5'8 but a 17 stone Martial arts expert thats been lifting weights a long time.

Exmoor trim use to do a forward facing locking seat for the rear witha 3 point belt, thats what is being retro fitted to the MOD landys now

Its balancing the cost thats the problem, i know you cant put a price on the mrs but you know what i mean....
