new (or S/H) actuator.

Knackered then , my god it's never ending with this Freelander, how much I've spent on it and with what still needs doing I could've had a decent one .Sunroof leak to sort ,leak in the tool compartment, front bearing on an advisory.Previously had recon prop ,transfer box ,diff,2 window regulators, brake cylinders ,brake pipe ,brake caliper, steering components ,handbrake cables ,discs and pads and had it about 5 years.

I don't know if you've had a good or bad run really. If you've had a recon prop, transfer box and diff - but without a VCU - the you're probably asking for more trouble! I'd find it hard to think that all 3 of those would go and you not need a VCU.

The pads and discs are consumables - its a 17 year old car - if it doesn't need pads and discs, then its a miracle. Pads you might need on a 3 year old car and the discs for an L Series are dirt cheap.

The other brake and steering stuff is probably due to all the salt put down on UK roads, its amazing the difference between UK cars and cars in non-salting countries like here - my L Series looks virtually new underneath.

I've had mine 6 years. I've had to recon the IRD and replace the ABS modulator, other than that its been boringly reliable. In fact I was quite glad when the WOF (MOT) station gave me an advisory for the brake discs - something to do :) Got a genuine pair form a LR stealer for £25 - sorted.

The IRD event aside, I've probably spent more money and time adding extras than repairing it. Luck of the draw I suppose - and a salt free environment.

you are very lucky GrumpyGel with no salt on the roads the moment the weather goes cold here they are salting I think it is due to the fact that it has become like the USA and every body is suing each other but I have to laugh when at the sea side you see cars going into the water .

It was the complete prop including VCU .checked the actuator and when you press the remote to lock and unlock you can hear it working
