1990 defender 90 200TDI.
I changed the flange and seal on the rear output. It seems to still be leaking the same way it was before I changed the seal. Can anyone help me figure out what's next?
 
Could be a poor new seal, incorrectly fitted, scored shaft or housing or too much play on the bearing for the seal to cope.

Then what's next in the steps to find the problem? If there is too much play which most likely what it is because I have clanking when accelerating or changing gears. If it's a poor housing is that fixable or do I have to replace?
 
Check the breathers not blocked first, if it's ok I guess taking it apart again and trying to make out where it's leaking....and then why is next.

Clanking doesn't sound good :confused: I assume you've checked u/js?

The u js are good. It's the flanges that give a lot of play in front and back. How is that fixed? I will check the breathers. I hope it's something as simple. Or I may have another leak and need to change some gaskets maybe.
 
Did you replace the felt washer ???( I assume it os the same as my box on my 300tdi)

You say clanking? I had a thunk on take off this was my A frame ball joint.

As above, the clanking/clunking issue is commonly linked to worn bushes or bearings (A-frame, radius arms, UJ's).

I had a recent issue with pressurised diffs - remedied by fitting new Fr & Rr breathers, but this manifested as leaking EP90 at the wheel hubs... still worth checking yours.

Otherwise, take it to bits again, stage by stage, keeping an eye open for any tell-tale signs of where the leak might be occurring (good light will help), then clean everything up and reassemble with a new seal (I'd use a genuine part).

Bit of a pain doing the job again, but other than living with the leak (depending on severity), there's no real alternative.

In terms of play at the flanges, mine are the same, however it seems to be the way with most of the drivetrain on my 90. I guess if both front and rear flanges show similar movement, but it's only the rear that's leaking, then this shouldn't be the cause of your problem... there again, you never can be sure.

The felt was was replaced yes. The clanking I feel is the drive shafts being too lose from the flanges.

The clanking is quite irritating. Figured I would slowly go trough to hangs all bushings and what not.

The leaking is coming from the brake drum again. My flange from the rear output was damaged pretty bad. I did reorder and fit a new one. New felt washer. New seal. It seems this time there is more leaking than normal. I will check it all again and slowly go through it. Thanks for the help.
 
I found one of he culprits and it was the screw that is not on the transfer box but holds oil. The drain plug for the filter. I have to recorder a new kit for that now.

With the drum off is there any side to side / up and down movement in the flange/output shaft ?

Maybe a few photos of where you think the leaks are, as the rear output is not where your latest leak is...:D:D. As you say it is a screw that is not on the transfer box...it may save peeps getting confuzzified.

Oil leaks from just about any where end up on the drain plug [screw] in the pic as it is the lowest point.
 
So I checked the breathers to make sure they are good. It's coming from the front where the shifter is connected and behind the brake drum it's leaking. Now the drum I believe is whining. What could that be?? I let go of the accelerator it doesn't. When I speed up it does. Is this fixable??
