Rear number plate light

Noticed bulb has blown and the black wire coming from the back of the holder is unconnected to anything. Wire just dangles there, whispering "I'm gonna absorb your entire day, then set your fusebox on fire!"

Assuming this black wire is earth, can I simply splice it into the brake light earth or should I earth somewhere else?

There's the towbar wiring to consider, which someone has kindly disconnected, so I thought it might be worth a question just in case the number plate light on the vehicle somehow powers the number plate light on the tow plate.

Thanks in advance...again ;)

You will find the light is earthing itself through the fixings. You can connect to any earth or create a new one :)

Thanks Harlequin. Do you think the number plate light on the towbar is powered by the number plate circuit on the vehicle?

I'm not sure if the towbar electrics have their own power cables coming from the chassis rails, or whether they're somehow dependent on the wires from the various light circuits at the rear?

Your towbar circuits should be piggy backed off the Landy tail lights. The number plate light is fed of one of the side light circuits.

Ah, good to know. Just finished the wiring. Took number plate earth straight to body rather than splicing into another earth going to the other side. All works nicely now.

Next job is to wire up the tow bar electrics, which a previous owner kindly cut through with a pair of scissors and didn't put back together. Still, I get to use more of those nifty heat shrinkable crimps (I need to get out more, this Landy is taking over my life )

:) I think you must have bought your Landy from the same bloke I bought mine from. So far, your electrical issues have been exactly the same as mine were. I hope your chassis is in better shape though.

Probably. Nothing would surprise me ;)

Chassis seems fine. Did hammer test before buying. It's been covered in black goo on the outside, but I don't think the internal has been touched. Bit concerned as there is build up of mud in some parts, which I reckon will dampen and rot it from the inside out. Not sure how to clear it yet - possibly remove the front bumper to get at some.
