Hi all, as of today I'm the proud owner of a D2 Landmark TD5. Been coveting a landy for years since I used to use defenders as a works van (ex overhead linesman).

Anyway as with any second hand vehicle there's a few niggles I need to iron out.

Main one is the rear N/S door lock won't unlock with the central locking. It opens manually by pulling the interior handle but not by pulling the button up. It also fails to function when locked or unlocked using the central lock button on the dash but bizarrely locks when locking the vehicle using the remote fob.

Am I correct in thinking this will require a new actuator?

Already sorted the noisy heater fan (debris fallen in to the fan), just need to sort rear door seal now and some dash lights aren't functioning.

Not a long list for a 14 year old motor!

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
 
The symptoms you describe are quite usual when a lock assembly has failed, nothing bizarre, it's just the way the lock and "superlock" motors work.
Sadly, yes. you'll probably require a new lock mechanism. There are some who claim that the internal motors can be replaced, but being honest, they look like a nightmare to get into, even if you are prepared to cut your hands to ribbons in the attempt. Unfortunately, new locks aren't cheap, but you do risk a shortened life with second user units.

As the seller has actually ordered an actuator prior to selling it (and is paying for it) I'm actually pleased it's not much more taxing. I may even pay a garage to change it as I hate doing anything on doors with all the trim and faff etc and looking through that link I'll be lucky to keep my skin. Definitely one for a relaxed weekend if I decide to DIY. Cheers.

The first time I did that job it took about three hours, but after doing it on a couple of doors I managed to get it down to just over an hour, with no loss of skin. one thing to remember if you do decide to DIY, make sure that you collect all the little metal linkages and put them in your pocket. Trust me, if you drop one you'll never see it again.

Also some of them repair them, I didn’t want to mess around , was very lucky I managed to open the door as it had deadlocked and by messing around with the dashboard door lock switch and handle I got it open without having to rip the door panel off

Yes, it is similar but on the D2 the whole window frame has to unbolted and lifted up to get enough room to wiggle the latch assembly out of the door.

Oh blimey that does sound like a bundle of fun , Not ;)

I had to unbolt the window regulator but was able to just push it to one side, hardest bit was working out how to get the door handle off , also made me cringe when I had to unhook the glass clips seeing the clips only came with the door glass

Also removed the horrible window tints from the side rear doors and boot window, was a nightmare trying to see out of it at night
 
Regarding your rear door seal, check the tailgate hinges for wear. The weight of the spare tyre does them no favours and can cause the tailgate to drop slightly meaning your seal could well be servicable and changing it may not help.

All advice given so far is spot on regarding lock actuators, ive got nothing to add having done 3 myself :)

Cheers dude, just ordered some bulbs for the climate control panel cos a couple are busted as well as an OEM service kit and oil etc as I don't know when the last service was carried out.

The tailgate is next on the list as it's hopefully easy and free.
 
Interesting I couldn't make out why mine was leaking after heavy down pour, got the sunroof sorted now this to do:)
 
Cheers all, fixed the rear door leak by adjusting the hinges and lock and removing the ladder which wasn't helping the seal.

Service went well and I've replaced the broken dash bulbs so can see the climate control in the dark.

Only job left now is the actuator which I'll be tackling myself tomorrow. I've seen a few guides and while I accept it's a fiddly bugger I'm more than capable and will save a few quid. I'll report back tomorrow.

In the meantime I'm loving the disco, even if I am only getting 24mpg......

Take a tip from one who knows, there's a little bent wire link between the outer door handle and the latch assembly. Don't leave it just dangle, remove it completely and put it in your pocket. If you should let it drop, trust me you'll probably never see it again.

That’s good advice mate, I’ve actually got a white sheet to put down while I’m doing it so even if I drop anything I actually have a chance of finding it.

I should have added, should you drop it inside the door it's probably lost for ever. The little metal linkage thingy eating monster will have it.

All done. Would have taken me less than an hour if the linkage eating monster hadn’t turned up. Dropped the bloody thing in the door and despite magnet fishing for half an hour I had to remove the door and tip it over to get it back.

Had I not dropped the linkage it would have been an absolute doddle.

Lock works properly now anyway so can’t complain. Cheers all for the advice.
