Alright everyone!

A good friend of mine has a problem...

about 6 months ago he had black stuff dripping from his bell.

The verdict from the doctor was that he had been wading through **** without wading plugs and this had nackered his rear main oil seal.

So, he bit the bullet, whipped his engine out and fitted a new one.

Since then he has not waded without his plugs in. However now the infection has returned and the black stuff is once again dripping from his bell!!!!!

The only conclusion he can come to is that the rear main seal has gone again. But before he sorts it out again has anyone got any idea of what would be causing it to go??

Surly any new seal should be lasting more than 6 months?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Was it a genuine seal or a ****part one?
What mileage has the injun done?

Alright Trewy! Thanks for the reply.

I dont know whether it was a ****part or not. I will ask him. I think the engine is around the 100,000 mile mark.

If the main bearings are worn, the crank will wobble a bit and knacker the seal quickly, but that's rare.
I've heard of several cases of ****part seals failing prematurely.

My allakes4x4 one lasted about 3 days. I put nearly a double dose of wynns oil stop leak stuff, and it actually worked! Went fro literally ****ing out, to barely a drip now.

Took the whole engine out and then checked! It was seated properly.

I had a couple of other reasons too for removal of engine, but it was sunday and i needed the LR later that day so i couldn't get a new one.

The rubber seak, where it was a nice tight fit over the crank nose was now really loose, like it had contracted or summat.

But, like i said, i got some stop leak stuff, and was amazed that it actually worked! Well too.

Spoke to him last night and he tells me it was a ****part seal!

Boydy tell me more about this magical leak stopper you speaketh of!!

Wynns engine sealer or something like that.

Be careful with it, its like RAD sealer, it just sort of seals everything, inc. stuff you might not want sealed.

Update: the seal stopped doing its job today, and promptly dumped my entire oil contents on the floor.

Barrstid.
