Just another quick Query, Got a few but will try and get through them one by one.
About rear lights, Brake and Reverse are on the Light clusters going up sides of columns, My rear lights are on bottom of the rear bumper arrowed on Pic. Is this Right / Legal, as I read somewhere they changed them, Or do I need to check for bulbs in side ones ??

So long as they work they are fine.

There was a vague (and I do mean very vague) crossover year around 1996/97/98 that they changed it all over on the 300Tdi as the 200 only had light clusters in the body and not in the rear bumper at all.

Thanks, that's another problem ticked off my list.

What’s vague? The 300 series as it was call then introduced with the 1995 MY, including both diesel and petrol engines both was introduced without the bumper lighting, but due to customer feed back the duplicating off lamps was introduced quickly by the dealer. Then with 1996 - 1998MY vehicles it was a standard.
So what the engine has to do with the D1s rear lighting arrangement? Nothing Simples

Our 1994 MY (September registered if that makes any difference) 300Tdi Discoveries on the farm had bumper lights from factory, we had 2 X 7 seater and 2X commercial vans delivered brand new on a transporter direct from Sollihul.

Curiouser and curiouser as the random rear lighting is a feature it seems as the deleted indicators in the clusters and then reinstated them later on.

Bugging me now. Found this, but doesn't explain why. https://www.landrover.co.uk/explore-land-rover/one-life/heritage/the-original-discovery.html
Quote Following a model update in 1994, further changes were made to the Discovery. The 200Tdi and 3.5 V8 engines were replaced with 2.5-litre 300Tdi and 3.9-litre Rover V8 engines, as well as the addition of stronger gearboxes. The updated models also featured external design revisions such as larger headlights and a second set of rear-lights in the bumper.
Second Set so should Technically should both sets work o_O

"1994 Update: The newer models featured larger headlamps and a second set of rear lights in the bumper. The new rear lights had their wiring configuration changed several times to meet real or expected European safety legislation. Some vehicles were left with an arrangement where the vulnerable bumper contains the only working direction-indicator lights; other examples have these lights duplicated in the traditional rear pillar location."

From what I've found tinkering, the rear light clusters should be interchangeable in that the wiring should be in place to accomodate both types. So if you have indicator-less lights and want to add them (or vice versa) then it's just a matter of swapping the light clusters and changing the indicator relay to account for the extra bulbs.

It does look odd though following a later one at night, and the only tail lights are in the bumper. Might be a simple mod to add least add those to the brake light position

When I had my 1996 300 Tdi Disco,which was a jap reimport, I had 4 rear lights.
Two in the bumper and two on the rear light assemblies. I recall seeing other Disco,s with the same.
Always felt that the 4 rear lights was much safer.

Leave you indicators in the bumper. When you put your hazards on & have the back door open both indicators can still be seen(unlike the early 200tdis)
