hi there got a rear droan at between 30-40 very faint over that it goes until u hit 70 then it comes back but alot more been in the back as it is a freelander van u can hear it but it is not one side its seems to be the whole lenght of the rear axle any ideas did take whole prop shaft off and it still there so not vcu bearings many thanks

thats how mine started thought it was tyre noise then i went on to the prop bearings now when i put it in reverse i get a cracking noise of to the garage on thursday:mad: hope yours does not get to this stage and hope they are unrelated

sorry am late with the reply cremator my puter seems to be going the same way as my hippo will let you know

ok mate thanks now to add to the droan when pulling away athere is a click coming from the rear oonly happens in 1st and 2nd gear a if u jerk on the gas pedal u can make the click sound any ideas

Food for thought...
Have a feel for play in the diff, make sure its nice and smooth and check out the VCU bearing and prop ujs.
Is the droan more evident on accel or overrun?
Have a look at the rear diff mounts. Any play will cause the knocking and certainly cant help with the harmony of propshaft and diff balance!

hi tere had whole prop off and still there replaced diff nose mount the other 2 are fine. droan is only faint at betweemn 30 and 40 hit 70 and it lound. the click seems only to be there when in changing from 1st to2nd and if in 2nd gear you jerk on and off gas pedal

Cool that rulesthe diff mounts out!
Play in diff or prop uj.
Play in the prop UJ would provide your resonance problem and click on accel give it a good twisting with a lever bar.
Also check your subframes mounting bolts are tight too.
Regards,

how do you check the diff could it be a rear drive shaft also when you say use a bar on ujs do u just slide bar between the youok and turn the whole uj around

The lever bar can be slid between the yoke and spider, wriggle and pry and see if there is any play. Ensure the bearings of the UJ are nice and smooth.

Check the Diff input flange endfloat and with the wheels off the floor, see how much play there is between the flange and wheels. A small amount is expected but a massive amount is unacceptable. Ensure the diff bearings are smooth.
Out of interest how many miles has your hippo done?

Have you checked the CV joints??? Also, the wheel bearings could be shot. Even if there is not movment in the rear wheel, the bearings could still be gone. Jack the back of the car up and turn each wheel slowly feeling for rubbing, grinding etc. You should also be able to hear a difference in each side if there is something a miss.

hi thanks update just taken the front bit of the propshaft off again and went for a run. the clicking as gone and also the rear droan as gone so now the droan could well be the vcu bearings but what about the click.now the vcu bearings is it worth getting the allmakes 4x4 ones or should i pay the extra alot extra and get the hardy spicer ones thanks

Use HS because thry are OEM I think... but theY shouldn't be hugely expensive...

Cheers
