I have had a look at old threads but can't see the answer.... Rear door has now decided not to lock.....The key turns and the little lever on the inside of the lock can be seen to move up and down but it is now not locking. I have never felt any click or resistance when turning the key to lock or unlock it. Is this fixable with a hammer and a socket set? Thanks...:)

Will the latch lock into place if you push it by hand with the door open? Also can you hear the lock clicking as if it were locking but its just not? My drivers door has to be slammed kinda hard in order to lock it. If not slammed hard enough it will still looked as if its latched properly but the latch isn't engaged enough on the striker for it to lock

the doors are meant to lock???? surely thats pointless when u can crawl through the door gaps :)

cheers steve

It's probably the little spring within the lock. You can buy a repair kit on ebay. Simple fix.

When the key is turned no resistance or click can be felt but it seems to move as it should... just wont lock.
Many thanks Reiny... I have ordered the spring kit off ebay. Has to be worth a fiver and I think that could well sort it. Hope I can use my new hammer and drill :D

Sorry to drag up an old thread but did you manage to sort the issue with your door? I have the same thing on my 90 Was going to order one of the kits but thought I would see if it worked for you.

Same problem here. Got a shiny new replacement lock since the old one is just kept working by some rubber bands.
New lock won't hold the door - no mechanical interaction between the grip and the latch. Don't know what I'm missing...

I fitted one of the springs to mine and it fixed it, well worth doing (although I've now replaced the entire lock with a new central locking version).

How did you fit the central locking to your rear door.?! The kit I was looking at just confused me.

Thanks, have ordered that, is there a fix from inside / other in meantime that arrives and is fitted? was thinking of a piece of metal behind that phyisically stops latch going up? Have to go through France and Calais port later this week with a fully loaded defender so it’s find a solution or weld the door shut lol

Fit an external van lock, I have one of these on mine: link. not to obtrusive, most of the time is not used, but when needed gives a little extra security to getting the door open. Even a standard hasp and staple would work.

Had that before. Is it working with door open. If so try the keeper to see if its moved slightly. Check it and if looks to have moved adjust it back to where it was.

thanks, yes the keeper is slowly falling down either trying door or with vehicle moving - will use elastic band or something to keep in place (up) while travelling until I can fix properly, thanks!

1000 miles and nearly 24 hours later elastic band bodge still in place! thanks for everyone’s help, spring will be replaced properly shortly. Did try and secure bands under one of those screws but could not make them budge with the screwdrivers available!
